As a nonprofit, public charter school, GALA is tuition-free and enrolls students from within and around Cleveland. GALA currently offers two target immersion languages: Mandarin and Spanish. As the only dual language immersion school in Northeast Ohio and the first Mandarin immersion school in Ohio, GALA offers a nationally successful education model to the region.As a dual language immersion school, GALA provides instruction of all core subjects (Math, Reading, Science, Social Studies) in two languages: English and a Target Language (Mandarin or Spanish), leading to dual proficiency (reading, writing, listening, speaking).Job Title: 6-8 Middle School Teacher, English Language Arts / Social StudiesLocation: Cleveland, OhioReports To: PrincipalStatus: Full-time, Salary*Job Summary*Our 6-8 English Teachers will primarily be responsible for English Language Arts (ELA), Social Studies, and SEL (social-emotional learning) instruction for student groups of 6th-8th grades. The ELA teacher will integrate the content of core subjects and provide all instruction in English, according to GALA’s dual language immersion model. This position will contribute to the development of the GALA’s curriculum and Academic Plan, and work as a collaborative team member with the bilingual Mandarin/Spanish teachers, the other ELA teachers, the Integrated Arts teacher, and Physical Education teacher to ensure dual proficiency in core content and literacy.*Responsible for delivering on the following goals:** Create and maintain an English language immersion atmosphere (visual and verbal) at all times* Provide effective, engaging, and motivating instruction according to GALA’s model of immersion and meets Ohio’s New Learning Standards, reaches all students, and is driven by data* Deliver academic achievement results* Initiate and maintain ongoing and effective communication with all students’ parents/families that demonstrates quality customer service*Essential Job Functions:** Contribute to the development and adaptation of curriculum and assessments for all core subject areas to be appropriate for GALA’s academic program;* Collaborate effectively with English teachers, Mandarin teachers, Spanish teachers, Specials Teachers, Intervention Specialists, ESL teachers, and Speech and Occupational Therapists to provide the highest quality instruction possible for all students;* Thoughtfully plan effective instruction that engages students in their learning, and that develops on their learning over time, meets standards, uses technology, and a variety of materials;* Plan lessons that encourage students to talk with each other about content regularly and consistently in English throughout the instructional day;* As needed, plan for differentiation in instruction to meet varying needs, learning styles, interests and abilities that will vary across subjects and over time;* Plan student interventions based on individual student performance data;* Administer regular formative and summative assessments for all core subject areas (including ELA) and use data to inform instruction along the way;* Successful classroom management by supporting positive behavior through the use of PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports);* Together with Mandarin/Spanish/English program colleagues and Principal, develop a schedule for the development, and exhibition of each student’s portfolio (electronic and hard-copy);* Communicate regularly with students’ parents and families;* Participate in open houses and outreach events to prospective and current families;* Attend all school exhibits, ceremonies, events – at least 10 may occur beyond the regular school day;* Act to upgrade own professional knowledge and skills through a growth mindset;* Participate in professional development, including during the summer prior to the start of the school year;Qualifications* Bachelor’s degree required* Middle Childhood (4-9) certification preferred; Language Arts and Social Studies licensed for middle school grades* Strong interpersonal and communication skills, especially with students and parents;* Experience in new innovative school models, language immersion a plus;* Enthusiasm to innovate, try new things, and be a part of a collaborative team;* Experience working cross-culturally and/or committed to improving one’s own cultural competence* Passion for early language immersion education;* Special commitment to helping urban students succeed required;* Knowledge of charter schools and the education landscape of Cleveland preferred.Applications are accepted until positions are filled, but we strongly encourage candidates to apply as soon as possible to be considered for the first set of interviews.GALA actively seeks and encourages candidates of traditionally underrepresented groups (race, color, national origin, gender, age, disability) to apply.Learn more at: and Type: Full-timePay: $40,000.00 - $55,000.00 per yearBenefits:* Dental insurance* Health insurance* Paid time off* Retirement plan* Vision insuranceEducation:* Bachelor's (Preferred)License/Certification:* teaching license?
