Serve as a resource for families of students.School Health AssistantPRIMARY FUNCTION: The school health aide will assist the school nurse by caring for students for general health, injury, or illness. The responsibilities include facilitating routine screenings, documenting health clinic data and reports, and monitoring and inventorying supplies.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned by School Health Coordinator. Administering first aid to injured students and providing short-term care to enhance the comfort and safety of injured or ill students Administering and recording medications in accordance with District policy under the supervision of the School Nurse Supervisor to ensure a working understanding of medications that are administered Taking and recording vital signs. Administering vision screenings and other screenings as directed. Maintaining computerized listings of immunizations, chronic health conditions, daily visits, and health screenings for each student. Completing state reports on immunization and vision and hearing screenings. Notifying appropriate staff and parents when health-related incidents and accidents occur Performing specialized procedures with appropriate training and supervision Directing ill or injured students home or to appropriate emergency facilities when needed Assisting School Health Team with facilitating required staff professional learning Working with parents and students to promote preventing and controlling illness and disease as directed by the Nurse Supervisor. Ability to determine when to act independently and when to refer medical situations to the Nurse Supervisor and an administrator Ability to learn and apply laws, rules, and regulations relating to health activities. Ability to learn, explain, and perform health-related procedures. Ability to interpret health and safety standards Ability to identify and prioritize health-related incidents. Ability to work as a floater in different locations as required Participation and completion of all required District and Support Professional learning; Other duties as deemed necessary by Nurse Supervisor.JOB QUALIFICATIONS:To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITY: • Basic math, writing, communication, and accounting skills.• Ability to operate a computer and possess basic word processing skills.• Ability to operate general and specialized medical equipment such as blood pressure cuffs, insulin, medication pumps, and other delivery devices, and AED preferred at hire.SUPERVISION/TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITY:This job has no supervisory responsibilities. Acts as a resource for families, volunteers, and district staff, including training, demonstrating, and answering questions.EDUCATION AND TRAINING:High school diploma or equivalent. An equivalent combination of education and experience is accepted. MA or LPN preferredEXPERIENCE: 0 - 2 years experience in working with children is preferred. Experience working in a related field preferred.CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS:CPR, First Aid, and Medication certification are preferred at hire or within three months, required within the first six months of employment. This position requires that the employee work under the delegation of a licensed nurse.SAFETY TO SELF AND OTHERS:• To safely perform this position, the employee must be familiar with the safety rules of the job and participate in all safety training provided by the department. Employees must wear personal protective equipment whenever required, ask for assistance if the task requires more than one person, and, if unsure how to perform a task safely, stop and ask a supervisor for instruction before continuing.• All employees of the District are responsible for maintaining a safe and healthy workplace and ensuring that safety precautions and practices are followed.• Employees are expected to immediately report any unsafe working conditions or safety problems to the immediate supervisor.
