Positions in this class are exempt from the screening and referral requirements of the Iowa Department of Administrative Services - Human Resources Enterprise.Museum Education Assistant Intern – State Historical Museum of IowaThe Museum Education Intern will support the State Historical Museum of Iowa’s education team in delivering engaging educational experiences and developing public programs that connect visitors of all ages to Iowa’s rich history and culture. This internship offers hands-on experience in museum education, program design, public engagement, and cultural interpretation within a professional museum environment.Interns will gain exposure to museum operations, event coordination, educational curriculum development, and community outreach while contributing to meaningful work that directly impacts visitor learning and engagement.Duties and Essential Activities Work a hybrid schedule with selected in-person dates at the State Historical Museum of Iowa to assist with live programming and events. Support the planning, coordination, and facilitation of seasonal and special educational programs serving learners of all ages. Collaborate with museum educators to research historical topics and transform them into interactive learning experiences. Assist in the creation and development of educational materials, lesson concepts, and public programming for diverse audiences including students, families, and community groups. Observe and participate in behind-the-scenes museum operations such as exhibit preparation, visitor services coordination, and program logistics. Contribute ideas to improve visitor engagement, accessibility, and inclusivity in museum programming. Other duties as assigned that support departmental initiatives and special projects. Experience and Exposure OpportunitiesThrough this internship, participants may gain experience in: Educational program design and curriculum development Public speaking and facilitation skills Event planning and coordination Historical research and interpretation Community outreach and partnership development Professional communication and teamwork in a cultural institution Understanding museum administration, collections care considerations, and exhibit planning fundamentals Interns will leave with tangible portfolio pieces such as program outlines, activity guides, or event support documentation, as well as mentorship from museum education professionals.Requirements for Internship Currently pursuing a degree in History, Education, Museum Studies, Public History, Humanities, or a related field. Demonstrated interest in museums, education, public history, or cultural engagement. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a professional environment with minimal supervision. Strong organizational, communication, and time-management skills. Ability to lift up to 40 lbs. and safely use step ladders when assisting with program or exhibit setup.
