Our Neuromodulation business includes implantable devices compatible with mobile technology to help people who suffer from chronic pain and movement disorders. These non-opioid therapies allow us to provide interventional pain therapy to patients throughout the pain continuum.It sounds like science fiction: sending small electrical pulses to the spine to block pain signals or to the brain to suppress tremor. As an R&D Engineer at Abbott Neuromodulation, you will have the opportunity to develop technology platforms that improve the lives of those suffering from chronic pain and movement disorders. We value people with great ideas who partner with others both internally and externally to take action and accomplish goals.What You’ll Work On:Researches, develops, designs, and evaluates mechanical and electro-mechanical materials, components, assemblies, processes and/or equipmentConceptualizes new components using material knowledge and innovative mechanical designDevelops new products from initial design to market release with cross-functional partnersCreates and submits novel design solutions that expand the intellectual property of the businessConducts feasibility studies to verify capability and functionalityBalances design for reliability, manufacturing, and cost efficiencyMaintains detailed documentation throughout all phases of research and developmentPrepares technical reports, analyses, recommendations, and presentations reflecting the status and results of projects in progressParticipates/contributes to technical reviews of mechanical designsReviews and coordinates vendor activities to support developmentEstablishes and cultivates an extensive network of support to facilitate completion of assignmentsExercises judgment in selecting innovative, practical methods to achieve problem resolutionExhibits and instills decision-making based in objective engineering principles (analytical and empirical)Develops test methods, models, and fixtures to evaluate designsPlans, coordinates, and executes mechanical design verification activities for new productsMulti-tasks, prioritizes, and meets deadlines in a timely mannerIdentifies, communicates, and mitigates project risksBuilds and maintains positive and cooperative relationships internally and externallyEnsures compliance to all applicable internal requirements and external regulationsPosition may require up to 10% travelRequired Qualifications:Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or related technical discipline OR Associate’s degree in a technical discipline with 5-10 years of experience0-3 years of relevant product development or R&D work experience (preferably with implantable hardware)Internship, co-op, or academic project experience in mechanical design, preferably in a regulated industry (e.g. medical, aerospace, automotive, etc.)Experience with CAD and FEA modeling software (SolidWorks, ANSYS preferred)Product development experience within a regulated environment (e.g. medical, aerospace, automotive, etc.)Experience working with cross-functional teams and taking initiative to ensure successful outcomesExcellent oral and written communication skillsPreferred Qualifications:Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or related technical disciplineMultiple internships or co-ops in mechanical design, preferably in a regulated industry (e.g. medical, aerospace, automotive, etc.)Demonstrated hands-on experience designing or updating designs for manufacturing processes used in medical devices (e.g. biocompatible material selection, injection molding, machining, printed circuit board fabrication, extrusion, etc.)Strong history of cross-functional collaboration with other engineering disciplines (Electrical, Manufacturing)Experience with statistical techniques (e.g. DOE, hypothesis testing, regression analysis, etc.)Knowledge of design controls and regulations for medical device developmentApply NowLearn more about our health and wellness benefits, which provide the security to help you and your family live full lives: your career aspirations to Abbott for diverse opportunities with a company that can help you build your future and live your best life.
