There may be additional in-office days for team or company events.The RoleIronclad is hiring a Legal Engineer to join our product team and serve as the bridge between legal expertise and product development. The ideal candidate is a commercially minded lawyer with experience in working closely with product and engineering teams and is excited to translate how lawyers think about contracts into structured, scalable product logic.This role will sit in the Product team and report directly to the Head of AI Product. What You'll Do:Act as the legal voice within the product team, ensuring outputs reflect real-world legal expectationsTranslate commercial legal concepts into product requirements, workflows, and system logicPartner closely with engineering to design, implement, and iterate on product featuresEnsure the product aligns with how in-house legal teams review and negotiate contractsFocus on commercial agreements, including NDAs, MSAs, and broader contracting workflowsDesign and oversee labeling, annotation, and evaluation workflowsEnsure product outputs meet standards for accuracy, usability, and legal qualityBuild structured datasets that improve product performance over timeLead a team of contractors supporting labeling and product workflowsHelp define hiring needs and build out the legal engineering function over timeCollaborate across product, engineering, and legal stakeholders; own projects end-to-end, from concept through executionCommunicate clearly between technical and non-technical teamsParticipate in customer and internal feedback loops to continuously improve the productQualificationsJ.D. and an active license (or equivalent)6+ years of corporate/commercial legal experience (strong preference for in-house)Deep experience with commercial contracts, including NDAs, MSAs, and vendor/customer agreementsExperience working with or alongside product and engineering teamsDemonstrated ability to translate legal reasoning into structured, repeatable systems or workflowsStrong communication skills across both legal and technical audiencesKey Skills & AttributesCommercially minded, with a strong understanding of business outcomes and tradeoffsProduct-oriented, with the ability to think in systems, workflows, and scalabilityTechnically fluent and comfortable working closely with engineersBuilder mentality, with excitement for creating processes, infrastructure, and teams from scratchStrong communicator, able to bridge legal and technical worlds seamlesslyProactive and "offensive-minded," with a willingness to take ownership and push ideas forwardWhy This Role MattersThis role sits at the core of Ironclad's product team, not on the sidelines, giving you direct influence over how AI handles real-world commercial legal work.
