Construction Accounting Manager

We are hiring an Accounting Manager for a well-established, fourth-generation, family-owned plumbing and HVAC contractor with more than 110 years of history, exceptional employee retention, and a highly collaborative culture.This high-visibility role will oversee day-to-day accounting operations while partnering closely with ownership and a fractional CFO on financial reporting, operational improvements, and continued organizational growth initiatives.The Accounting Manager will play a key role in managing construction accounting operations, month-end close, WIP schedules, payroll administration, accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing operations, and internal process improvements across both Vista Viewpoint and ServiceTitan systems.The organization offers a unique opportunity to join a stable and highly respected Berkeley-based company known for its sustainability initiatives, long-term employee tenure, and strong family-oriented culture.Responsibilities• Oversee day-to-day accounting operations for a construction and service-based organization• Manage general ledger accounting, journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, and financial reporting activities• Lead month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes• Prepare and review financial statements in accordance with U.S. GAAP• Manage WIP reporting and percentage of completion accounting for ongoing projects• Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, customer billings, collections, and cash flow activities• Manage AR and monthly billings processes across construction and service operations• Administer payroll processing, payroll taxes, and union-related payroll activities• Support 401(k) administration and employee benefit-related accounting functions• Partner with ownership and the fractional CFO on budgeting, forecasting, operational reporting, and process improvements• Help bridge accounting workflows and reporting between ServiceTitan and Vista Viewpoint ERP systems• Oversee and support accounting staff while collaborating cross-functionally with project managers, service operations, and contracts teams• Assist with audit preparation, compliance requirements, and internal control improvements• Identify opportunities to streamline accounting processes, reporting accuracy, and operational efficienciesQualifications• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field• 5+ years of progressive construction accounting experience• Strong experience with WIP reporting and percentage of completion accounting• Experience managing general ledger accounting and month-end close processes• Hands-on experience with accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing, payroll, and financial reporting• Understanding of construction accounting operations within project-based environments• Experience within plumbing, HVAC, mechanical contracting, or specialty subcontractor industries preferred• Experience within union shop environments preferred• Strong Excel skills and experience working within ERP/accounting systems• Strong communication, leadership, organization, and problem-solving skills• Ability to operate effectively within a collaborative, family-oriented cultureWhat's In It For You• Permanent, full-time direct hire opportunity• Competitive Base Salary• Annual Bonus• Pension Contribution• Opportunity to work directly with ownership and executive leadership• High-visibility accounting leadership role with long-term growth opportunity• Stable fourth-generation family-owned company with exceptional employee retention• Collaborative and employee-focused culture with strong long-term relationships• LEED Gold certified facility and sustainability-focused organization• Standard full-time benefits package including health coverage, retirement benefits, paid time off, and company holidays
