Job Description

Congregation Emanu-El is seeking a full-time Chef and Food Experience Coordinator to lead the culinary execution of synagogue events, programs, and daily café offerings. This role is responsible for preparing food that enhances communal experiences, reflects Jewish tradition, and supports the synagogue's dynamic calendar of events. The Chef will manage food preparation for Shabbat and holiday gatherings, operate the synagogue's weekday coffee bar, support educational and cultural programming, and contribute to the overall hospitality experience at Emanu-El. The ideal candidate brings a warm, friendly presence with experience in front-of-house or other customer-facing roles.The Chef will collaborate closely with the Programs and Events team to ensure that all culinary elements align with the themes, goals, and spirit of each event. Together, they will craft meaningful food experiences that reflect the values and culture of Emanu-El.This is a new pilot position, launched as part of our broader vision for elevating our community's food experience and cultural education. Opportunities for growth will be dependent on demonstrated impact and success. ResponsibilitiesShabbat and Holiday Food Service· Prepare and serve weekly Friday night Shabbat receptions featuring seasonal, Jewish-themed foods· Bake challah weekly for Shabbat and other synagogue needs· Prepare Shabbat dinners for relational small groups and larger gatherings (with support from prep staff when need)· Develop and execute menus forJewish holidays and congregation-wide events in collaboration with the Programs team, highlighting diversity of Jewish cuisine and historyEmanu-el Cafe and Coffee Bar· Operate the coffee bar during open weekday hours, preparing and serving coffee and beverages· Produce a rotating menu of baked goods for café patrons· Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming café environmentProgram and Event Culinary Support· Provide food service for synagogue programs, includinglectures, classes, donor events, and staff events· Lead cooking classes or demonstrations as part of cultural and educational programming· Coordinate menu development and execution for thematic programs in collaboration with event staffSourcing, Budget, and Kitchen Management· Source ingredients and supplies for all food service activities, prioritizing quality and cost-effectiveness· Manage kitchen operations, including inventory, organization, sanitation, and food safety protocols· Work within event and program budgets, maintaining cost control while meeting food quality and presentation standards· Coordinate with synagogue staff regarding vendor payments, deliveries, and storage needsPartnership and Vendor Coordination· Build relationships with local chefs, vendors, and food purveyors to enhance Emanu-El's culinary offerings· Coordinate logistics for visiting chefs or outside partner food programsPreschool and Family Program Support· Prepare nutritious snacks for the synagogue's preschool program· Provide food support for family-friendly and intergenerational eventsQualifications· Minimum 3 years of professional restaurant or catering experience· Familiarity with Jewish culinary traditions and kosher-style food practices· Proficiency in preparing meals and baked goods at scale· Experience managing food service for events of varying sizes· Strong organizational and time management skills· Ability to work independently and as part of a team· Experience sourcing ingredients and managing food budgets· Experience in front-of-house or customer-facing roles· Demonstrated ability to provide warm, friendly, and community-oriented customer service· Comfort engaging with diverse individuals in a synagogue or communal environment· Barista experience or willingness to be trained· Ability to work Friday evenings, weekday evenings, and occasional weekend events· ServSafe (or equivalent) certification or willingness to obtainCompensation: $76,000-$80,000 based on experience.This is a full-time, exempt position based at Congregation Emanu-El San Francisco.
