Job Description

The Northern Virginia Association of REALTORS (NVAR) is seeking a dynamic, experienced, and service-driven Real Estate Attorney to serve as in-house legal expert on real estate law. This role provides legal guidance and strategic counsel to the CEO and Board of Directors to advance the Association's legal interests and ensure compliance with applicable laws, corporate governance standards, and organizational policies. The position also promotes ethical practices and professionalism among members through education and training on the REALTOR Code of Ethics and supporting dispute resolution services. Additionally, this role supports NVAR's education programs, advising on legal content and licensing requirements for Continuing Education (CE), Post-Licensing Education (PLE), and other post-licensing education courses across Virginia (VA), Maryland (MD), and the District of Columbia (DC).REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONSJuris Doctor (JD) degreeActive Bar membership and good standing in Virginia, DC, and/or MarylandMinimum 5 years practicing law with experience in the real estate industry and real estate transactionsLicensed attorney in Virginia, Maryland, and DCAt least 5 years working directly with clients, members, or customersPublic speaking or teaching experience, particularly presenting legal contentExperience in associations or nonprofit organizations is a plusKEY RESPONSIBILITIES Legal Counsel & Governance to the CEO and Board of DirectorsProfessional Services OversightMember Support & Public OutreachEducation & Compliance SupportCommittee Leadership & Staff LiaisonDepartmental ManagementCORE COMPETENCIES & SKILLSDeep knowledge of real estate law and legal best practicesEffective communicator with strong public speaking, teaching, and writing skillsStrategic thinker with sound judgment and decision-making abilitiesCustomer-service oriented with excellent interpersonal skillsAbility to draft legal documents, contracts, articles, and educational contentStrong organizational and project management skillsAbility to build positive, collaborative relationships with staff, members, andstakeholdersAbility to travel locally and regionally for meetings, training, and eventsWhy Join NVAR?At NVAR, we cultivate a collaborative, mission-driven culture that supports team success and individual growth.
