Johnson Controls is seeking an Electrical Engineer responsible for the design, development, validation, and support of active magnetic bearing (AMB) control system hardware for our JCI-Synchrony Engineering team! This position is onsite at our Salem, VA, facility. Candidates must be commuting distance, or able to relocate.How you will do it Design, develop, and validate new and updated Active Magnetic Bearing (AMB) control system hardware and firmwareDevelop schematicsSelect componentsDesign printed circuit board assemblies (PCBA)Develop manufacturing test protocols and fixtures for PCBAsConfigure and program FPGAsSupport existing AMB hardware designsManage, through research and validation, critical component substitutions as they become obsolete or otherwise unavailableInvestigate root cause of failures in production and fielded electronics; implement countermeasures to address failures in new designsUpdate PCBA designs to reduce costs and improve reliability and performanceSupport PCBA contract manufacturers via technical consultation and documentation updatesServe as technical interface with third partiesPCBA contract manufacturers - including automated test developmentPCBA design and layout servicesFPGA design servicesWhat you will needRequired Bachelor's degree in Computer, Electronics, Electrical, or Robotics Engineering3+ years embedded control system hardware development experience in a manufacturing environmentDevelopment of application-optimized real-time closed-loop control systemsCritical component selection and high-speed interface design such as experience with microprocessor, DSP, FPGA, memory devices, serial communications (USB, Ethernet), and peripheral interfaces VHDL / VerilogData converter optimization (D/A, A/D)Distributed power supply topologiesDevice-to-device serial interfaces (SPI, I2C, RS485, etc.)PWM control theoryHigh-speed signal and EMC (Electro-Magnetic Compatibility) PCBA layout considerationsThermal management designFamiliarity with advanced electronic diagnostic and laboratory equipmentProgramming & diagnostic tools (FPGA, JTAG emulators)PreferredHigh-speed clock domain managementBrushless motor commutation theoryEddy current position sensor technology and interfaceSoC (System on Chip) specifications (e.g., thermal limits) & architecture (e.g., memory controller design, system buses, cache control, processor interlocks, etc.)Real-Time Operating SystemsIndustrial control and data acquisition systemsElectro-mechanical systems and rotating machineryGit, C/C++, Python, Java, STM32/ARM, Windows and LinuxEmbedded control system software developmentCustom SoM (System on Module) specificationSchematic based design utilizing Altium and Xilinx tool setsHIRING SALARY RANGE: $86,000 - $115,000 (Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, location and alignment with market data.)
