Position Requirements: Formal Education / Training: Experienced Orthopedic Cast Technician, graduation with an Athletic trainer degree, Physical Therapy assistant, at least a 2 year nursing or LPN degree, EMT, paramedic or graduation from a Medical Assistant program and coursework with a solid understanding of anatomy and physiology. As well as some history in applying splints, casts and wound care. Workplace Experience: At least one year of experience as an Orthopedic Cast Technician, Orthopedic Surgical Technician, Athletic trainer, Physical Therapy assistant, nursing or LPN degree, EMT, paramedic is preferred. Orthopedic Surgical Technician or other related profession as a Casting Technician is preferred. Equipment and Skills Training: This position requires a solid, fundamental knowledge of anatomy and physiology as well as technical work with orthopedic devices, splinting, casting and wound care related activities. Clinical work is performed under the general supervision of a licensed patient care provider. Competent in the use of standard medical office equipment and medical supplies including computers with appropriate medical software, facsimile machines, copying machines and telephones. Physical Environment: Family medical practice office. Physical Effort: Stooping, turning, bending, squatting, kneeling and the ability to lift up to 50 pounds; constant/repetitive standing; requires normal, correctable vision and hearing, and the ability to accurately discern color as necessary to perform job functions. Ability to read, write and effectively communicate in English. Key Results: Applies casts using a variety of materials including plaster and synthetic casting materials and high and low temperature plastics. Applies and adjusts orthopedic devices such as braces, splints, and compression stockings. Arranges, assembles and adjusts traction equipment. Removes sutures and staples. Assists in Operating Room and Ambulatory Surgery. Cleans exam and procedure tables, work areas and tools according to schedules. Cleans general equipment (wheelchairs, IV poles, etc.) according to guidelines. Stocks exam and procedure rooms according to schedules and as needed. Inventories specialty items. Initiates reorder of supplies as needed. Performs appropriate documentation and patient education related to cast or splinting and as directed by physician, Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant resident or Registered Nurse. Arranges for take home supplies for patients. Observes universal precautions. Communicates effectively with patients/families and the clinic team in a manner that promotes positive working relationships. Maintains work area and personal appearance in a way that reflects professionalism and demonstrates to our patients, visitors and coworkers the importance we place on cleanliness, orderliness and safety. Completes additional duties and special tasks in a timely fashion.
