Job Description

The Registered Dental Assistant may perform duties such as preparing the patient for their treatment in the restorative dentistry or oral surgery, prepare materials and equipment for treatment and have them ready for the Dentist’s use, take x-rays and assist the Dentist in laboratory work. May perform other related work to include but not limited to: making appointments; answering the phone; ordering supplies; and doing the dental billing. Reports to the Dental Director.RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:Typical responsibility and duties for the Registered Dental Assistant include but are not limited to:Greets patients in waiting area and escorts patients to the operatory.Assists in the administration of treatment at the chair side as required or directed by the Dentist.Promotes an atmosphere supportive of good dental and general health by demonstrating good oral hygiene, questioning patients to ascertain home care status, instructing patients in techniques in flossing and brushing in accordance with protocol.Maintain a sterile and neat working environment according to current infection control procedures.Review the health history, make charts entries under the direction of the Dentist and assure completion of forms and signatures.Assume responsibilities associated with any expanded duties that may be delegated by the Dentist.Acquaint the patient with the aspects of their dental visit and provide support and compassion to that patient when it is needed.Stock and maintain clinical supply inventory.Review daily schedule to set up appropriate trays and instruments.Supervise preventative maintenance of dental equipment.Serves as supply liaison. Communicates with the clinic manager to assure prompt receipt of all orders.Operates X-ray equipment to make complete and/or selective oral radiographic services. Develops film by digital, automatic, or manual processing methods, mounts and labels X-rays.Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.May perform the procedures of obtaining endodontic cultures, testing pulp vitality, placing bases and liners on sound dentin, and remove excess cement from supragingival surfaces of teeth with hand instrument or floss.May perform the procedures of dry canals that were previously opened by supervising Dentist with absorbent points.May perform sizing stainless steel crowns, temporary crowns and bands, and temporary cementation and removal of temporary crowns.Other duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Current Registered Dental Assistant license through the Dental Board of California.Dentrix experiencePossession of an X-Ray License.High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.Three years of experience as a Dental AssistantCPR/BLS Certificate RequiredDemonstrate knowledge of dental health education subjects.Ability to complete forms in an orderly and accurate fashion.Able to use sound judgement. Possess a calm disposition and ability to work easily with people.Ability to relate to the public in all areas (racial, ethnic and economic).Willingness to participate in community events such as health fairs, etc.Must possess or have the ability to quickly obtain a valid California Driver’s License.Must have reliable transportation and proof satisfactory auto insurance to drive to multiple dental sites as needed. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:Certificate for coronal polishing.Bilingual Preferred (English/Spanish) Technical Knowledge and Skills Requirements:Four handed dentistry, fill scope dentistry procedures and oral radiographic services.Computer skills involving word processing, email and dental management programs such as EPIC are preferable. Equipment Used:PC, Fax, other office equipment, dental laboratory equipment, X-ray machine, Amalgamator, Asistina, Ultrasonic Cleaner, Autoclave and other sterilization equipment.Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:Occasional travel - this position rotates to other facilitiesYou will require to engage in prolonged, extensive, frequent and repetitive standing, sitting, walking, stooping, twisting, kneeling, reaching, crouching, bending, and position changes to examine and service patients, which may involve getting into awkward positions to access patients’ health.You must be able to lift up to 30 pounds occasionally.Moderate noise levels from dental drills and other lab equipment should be expected.Protective gear, including masks, safety glasses, and rubber gloves, is mandatory. Working in close quarters and near other people with little space between yourself and others is necessity.Exposure to radiation, mercury, and anesthetic gases is a possibility.You may encounter contaminants, diseases, and infections while working with patients.Manual dexterity and mobility are crucial, including the ability to keep your hand and arm steady while moving, quickly move your hand, grasp and manipulate objects, and demonstrate exceptional hand-eye coordination, control and finger dexterity to use dental implements for exams, mixing, placing materials on dental tools, products, and in mouths, and assemble very small objects,May be required to work evenings and or Saturdays and attend meeting outside clinic working hours.Will work on blood and blood-borne pathogens and will require OSHA training on a yearly basis. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:Be familiar with dental tools, instruments, materials and equipment and their appropriate use. Must follow procedures to protect against any infectious diseases and to maintain a sanitary workplace. Able to stand, walk on even surface, bend, sit, squat, reach, pull, and carry 25 lbs. Must feel comfortable interacting with the public.
