This individual works alongside the Senior Editor and the Web and Media Editor in the running of the journal and is responsible for overseeing the production of two print/digital issues per year. This is a mentorship-heavy position that includes the recruitment, hiring, and supervision of graduate-level editors, as well as undergraduate co-op students and/or interns. Candidate has excellent organizational skills and demonstrated mentorship experience, and is comfortable liaising with institutional departments, faculty across disciplines, and community members, as well as colleagues in the publishing industry. Must demonstrate familiarity with, and mastery of, copyediting both prose and poetry using the Chicago Manual of Style, as demonstrated through a copyediting test.Essential FunctionsManages three graduate-student editors during the academic year and another during the summer term, all recruited and hired in consultation with the Senior Editor and Web and Media Editor;Communicates with the Senior Editor and Web and Media Editor about duties and task overlap;Liaises with department business administrators, department head, Acre Books, and external university offices about needs;Participates in departmental and university-wide training;Liaises with vendors;Purchases and manages all office supplies;Manages payments to contributors and all associated paperwork;Manages a production schedule for the journal;When time allows, reads submissions and either rejects or sends along to genre editors/teams;Copyedits accepted pieces based on industry-standard Chicago Manual of Style, our house dictionary, and our house style guide (which they also maintain), and sends the edits to writers for their review;Prepares master document for typesetter, manages copyediting sessions, and liaises with mailing service to distribute copies of the journal to subscribers;Prepares accessible e-book PDF versions of each issue;Applies for awards and grants on behalf of the journal;Manages coordination, with Web and Media Editor, of the journal’s presence at the AWP national conference;Assists the Web and Media Editor in providing content for the website, planning assigned tasks for editors, curation of the miCRo series, and creation of social media posts;Works with the Web and Media Editor on local and virtual events.Required EducationBachelor’s Degree in English Composition, Professional Writing, Creative Writing, or related field.Eight (8) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement.Required ExperienceFour (4) years of relevant experience reviewing and editing documents, articles, books, etc. prior to publication.Additional Qualifications Considered• Ideal candidate would have knowledge of the field of literary-magazine or creative-writing publishing. • Masters or doctoral degree in creative writing.• Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams; Adobe Suite and/or Canva; and Wordpress.• Mastery of copyediting both prose and poetry using the Chicago Manual of Style, as demonstrated through a copyediting test.• Excellent communication skills.• Self-motivated and driven to learn new things.• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.• Ability to manage multiple tasks at once and successfully prioritize responsibilities. Physical Requirements/Work EnvironmentSitting - ContinuouslyRepetitive hand motion (such as typing) - OftenHearing, listening - OftenTalking - OftenStanding - SeldomWalking - OftenBending - SeldomStooping - SeldomClimbing stairs/ladders - SeldomReaching overhead - SeldomLifting - up to 20 pounds - Seldom Compensation and Benefits UC offers an exceptional benefits package designed to support your well-being, financial security, and work-life balance.
