A contract opportunity is available for an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS) serving an 11th-grade student in San Jose, CA. The role involves delivering 150 minutes per month of in-person orientation and mobility services with a focus on make-up time for missed sessions since August. This position supports the student diagnosed with Retinopathy of Prematurity, Nystagmus, High Myopic Astigmatism, and Optic Nerve Pallor, conditions that impact distance vision, cause eye fatigue, and necessitate accommodations such as visual breaks and enlarged text.Responsibilities:Provide direct orientation and mobility instruction tailored to the students visual impairments and individual goals.Assist the student with safely analyzing intersections and crossing streets, aiming for 90% accuracy in trials.Train and reinforce proper cane techniques, including stair navigation with 90% accuracy.Guide the student in planning and executing routes using internet and mobile apps in new locations, ensuring safety and competence in 4 different settings with 90% success.Document progress and report according to evaluation schedules, with the next evaluation due in November 2025.Address the students access needs related to the Expanded Core Curriculum, promoting social interaction and independent living skills.Qualifications:Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS or equivalent).Experience supporting students with complex visual impairments.Strong knowledge of O&M instructional strategies and assistive technology applications.Ability to develop individualized learning plans and adapt instruction based on student needs.Excellent communication and documentation skills.Location: San Jose, CaliforniaBe one of the first applicants, read the complete overview of the role below, then send your application for consideration.Duration: Contract position for the current school year (CSY)Student Level: High School, 11th grade This position offers the opportunity to support a student with unique visual challenges and to contribute meaningfully to their independence and safety.
