The Yard Jockey is responsible for the safe and efficient movement of trailers within the facility's yard. This role is critical to ensuring the continuous flow of freight by positioning trailers for loading and unloading at dock doors, staging areas, and parking lots. This is primarily a yard-driving position, but a Class A CDL is required for driving on public roads as needed for inter-facility transfers or other duties. Read on to find out what you will need to succeed in this position, including skills, qualifications, and experience.Responsibilities: Safely operate a hostler truck to move and spot empty and full trailers from yard locations to dock doors and staging areas as directed. Consistently adhere to all company safety policies, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations, and Department of Transportation (DOT) standards. Conduct thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections on all equipment (hostler, trailers, and dollies) and promptly report any defects, damage, or maintenance issues. Ensure trailers are properly and securely aligned, chocked, and locked at the dock doors to prevent movement during loading and unloading operations. Maintain an organized and orderly yard by parking equipment in designated spots and tracking the location of trailers and containers. Accurately complete all necessary paperwork, including trailer movement logs, inspection reports, fuel consumption records, and accident/incident reports. Maintain effective communication with warehouse staff and management via two-way radio to coordinate trailer flow and quickly resolve issues. Perform minor maintenance duties such as cleaning and refueling the yard hostler and other designated equipment. Ensuring the docking area and the immediate surrounding work environment are clean, safe, and free of clutter or chocking equipment that is not in use. All other duties as assigned Required Qualifications: Must possess a current, valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL). A clean Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) for the past three (3) years is required, demonstrating a history of safe operation and compliance. Must be able to pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) pre-employment drug screen and physical exam. Must consent to a check of the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse for any past drug or alcohol violations. Must be able to pass a comprehensive pre-employment background check, including criminal history and DOT-regulated employment verification for the past three (5) years. Previous experience as a Yard Hostler, Yard Jockey, or a similar commercial driving/spotting role is highly preferred. Must be 21 years of age or older (per DOT regulations for commercial drivers). Ability to climb in and out of the tractor multiple times per shift, lift up to 50 pounds, and work outdoors in all weather conditions. Strong attention to detail, excellent spatial awareness, and good verbal communication skills. Working Conditions: This position primarily operates outdoors in a warehouse yard environment. The work schedule may require shifts, weekends, and holidays to support 24/7 operations. Exposure to all weather conditions, vehicle noise, and industrial hazards is expected. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be provided and must be used as required.
