Liberty and Freedom Legal Group (L&F) is the only national non-profit civil rights and legal advocacy organization serving the larger special needs community. L&F now has full-time attorneys covering 10+ states across the nation and looking to grow to all 50 states.Find out if this opportunity is a good fit by reading all of the information that follows below.*Position Title*: Managing Attorney / Change Agent - Full-time position to change the world for the millions of Americans who have special needs and their families.*Position Summary*: Reporting directly to the Chairman, with wide latitude for independent judgment and decision-making, the duties of the Managing Attorney will include the management of the organization's legal advocacy efforts. The Managing Attorney will be a dynamic leader of the legal team, eager to achieve great outcomes for individual clients and to bring about systematic change in our communities. The Managing Attorney will supervise legal staff, work closely with other management team members to coordinate client services, assist the Chairman and Chief of Staff with oversight and quality assurance systems, while developing and maintaining strategic relationships with members of the bar and various community organizations. The Managing Attorney is expected to handle an active caseload with matters in the trial and appellate courts. This role will require substantial experience/knowledge in federal court. The Managing Attorney may perform other duties and special projects as required.*Reports to*: Chairman of Liberty and Freedom Legal Group*Location*: New York City, New York*Key Relationships*: The Managing Attorney works closely with the staff, Board Members, parents/clients, doctors, media, and the special needs community at-large.*Responsibilities*· Will be primarily responsible for providing case supervision and informing legal strategy for attorneys, paralegals, clerical staff, clerks, and volunteers including all federal litigation;· Will train, mentor and support the ongoing development of a diverse staff of attorneys and advocates, volunteers, and interns - including conducting performance evaluations;· Will assign and help to manage caseloads at a rate that promotes self-care and well-being;· Will maintain an individual caseload involving special education, disability and civil rights, especially in federal court· Will supervise the screening, acceptance, and rejection of new client cases;· Will assist in determining appropriate case stories for use in reports, advocacy materials, and public education and providing expert testimony to media on current disability rights law and related policy topics;· Will collaborate with Chief of Staff to administer and manage strategic projects and programs within the practice;· Will collaborate with Chief of Staff to monitor, track, analyze and report data and case deliverables for projects and programs within the practice;· Will present to and work with key stakeholders on changes in law, policy and practice within the special needs community;· Will collaborate with local, regional, and national partners on policy initiatives, funding, and litigation efforts within the special needs community, as needed; and· Will be involved with non-profit management operations and compliance.*Required Qualifications** Admission to the New York State Bar and Southern District of New York and Eastern District of New York AND seven (7) years of progressively responsible United States legal experience, including experience in SDNY/EDNY.* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.* Litigation experience.* Settlement experience.* Supervisory experience.* Ability to conduct research and analyses of pertinent legal authority.* Ability to analyze complex problems and develop creative solutions.* Effective communication skills sufficient to conduct investigations, to actively promote legal, policy, and legislative developments at federal, state and local government levels, and to develop and conduct trainings.* Experience working with or sensitivity to individuals with disabilities.* Ability to work independently and with appropriate supervision.* Demonstrated ability to take a leadership role in case planning and project coordination.* Knowledge of laws, rights, and services as they pertain to people with disabilities, and/or direct representation of people with disabilities.* MUST HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOR!*NOTE*: Selected candidates must remain members of the New York State Bar in good standing for the duration of their employment.*Desirable Qualifications** Admitted to Second Circuit and U.S. Supreme Court and experience in federal appeals process.* Legal Practice Management experience - litigation experience preferred.* Experience writing a public report or policy paper.* Experience in client representation, particularly in public interest and civil rights law.* Experience in organizing and conducting fact-intensive abuse or neglect investigations, evaluating evidence for compliance with legal, regulatory, and policy standards, and developing findings and implementing recommendations directed at systemic reform.* Experience developing and coordinating systemic advocacy projects related to disability community.* Experience in the disability rights movement and/or extensive contacts in the disability community.* Knowledge of federal and state special education law and regulations.* Experience at a non-profit or start-up organization* Ability to read, write and/or speak Spanish, with sufficient fluency to communicate with families is a benefit.*Salary: * Competitive, based on experience + benefitsApplications will be accepted until the position is filled.
