The ideal candidate will design, develop, and deploy world-class rail products and services by leveraging expertise in application-level development, embedded and near-real-time systems, multi-threaded programming, and cloud technologies. At Progress Rail, the team is not just building the future of rail"”they are making history every day.Key Job ElementsJob Responsibilities• Technical Leadership & Development:o Design, develop, and deploy containerized applications using C#, ensuring clean, scalable, and maintainable code based on SOLID and other design principles.o Architect and implement near-real-time embedded systems for rail applications, employing RTOS (e.g., FreeRTOS or QNX) for scheduling, interrupt management, and low-latency responses.o Develop firmware for hardware interfacing with sensors, actuators, and other devices, optimizing performance in resource-constrained environments.• Rail Industry Focus:o Contribute to the design and deployment of rail systems, such as energy management including cab electronics for real-time diagnostics and Positive Train Control (PTC) for automatic safety interventions.o Ensure all solutions meet strict industry compliance, safety certifications, and data security standards relevant to rail operations, both in the United States and abroad.• Concurrency & Parallel Processing:o Build and maintain multi-threaded/multi-tasked applications in C#, leveraging the Task Parallel Library (TPL) and async/await patterns to process real-time data streams and handle concurrent operations.o Ensure thread safety by implementing proper synchronization techniques (e.g., locks, semaphores) and designing systems for parallel processing.• Cloud Integration & DevOps:o Collaborate with DevOps teams to build and maintain automated CI/CD pipelines, integrating AWS services for deployment and scaling.o Manage cloud infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code (e.g., AWS CloudFormation or Terraform), and oversee managed databases such as REDIS and OpenSearch.• Cross-Functional Collaboration & Communication:o Provide technical support and detailed reporting on project statuses to leadership and internal stakeholders.o Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams in an Agile environment, participating in requirements analysis, design reviews, and code walkthroughs.o Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation throughout the SDLC.Education / Training• Bachelor's degree in computer science/engineering, software engineering, from an ABET accredited university or college.Qualifications and Experience• Required Skillso Fluency in C# and .NET Core, with a strong understanding of object-oriented design and common design patterns (e.g., Factory, Repository, Observer).o Strong understanding of Scrum Development Frameworko Strong understanding of object-oriented design and common design patterns (e.g., Factory, Repository, Observer).o Proven ability to design and implement low-latency embedded software for industrial or automotive applications.o Experience with RTOS environments, hardware interfacing, and performance optimization techniques.o Skill for writing clean, readable, and reusable C# based on SOLID design principles.o Understanding fundamental design principles behind a scalable OO applicationo Understand processes for soliciting customer requirements when developing softwareo Strong critical thinking and root cause identification skills.o Implementing automated testing platforms and unit tests• Preferredo Rail industry experience (e.g., Energy Management, cab electronics, PTC systems) and knowledge of industry-specific compliance is a strong asset.o 5+ years of hands-on C# development experience, with a preference for candidates experienced in embedded systems and near-real-time applications.o Demonstrated expertise in multi-threaded programming, cloud integration (AWS), and DevOps practices.o Above-average analytical, conceptual, and troubleshooting abilitieso Understanding of CI/CD and source code management tools such as GIT or SVNEssential and Physical Activities Functions:• Strength - Position typically involves work in an office environment with occasional visits to an industrial environment. Frequent/constant sitting. Occasional standing and walking. Occasional light to medium- level lifting or carrying (up to 50 pounds);• Motion - Position regularly requires standard motions associated with working in an office environment. Depending on assigned project, position may occasionally require motions involved in an industrial working environment, including some low to intense levels of pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, crouching, stooping, kneeling, reaching, grasping;• Vision/Hearing Requirements - Frequent verbal communications, including both talking and hearing;• Work Environment - Position is typically located in an office environment with occasional visits to an industrial environment which may include a non-temperature-controlled environment, as well as exposure to noise (85+ decibels), occasional exposure to temperature changes, heavy machinery and other hazardous working conditions requiring the use of PPE. Position may require travel as necessary, both domestic and international;• Emotional Demands - Very high level of responsibility. Must be able to coordinate diverse aspects of a project.
