Our Austin R&D office operates with a start-up mindset inside an established organisation "” embracing agile methodologies, fast-fail experimentation, and cross-functional collaboration to push the boundaries of what embedded technology can achieve underground and on the surface.*Role Overview*We are looking for a seasoned Senior Embedded Systems Engineer to join our Electronic & Software R&D department at our Arboretum, Austin office. You will serve as the technical lead for communication protocol development on embedded microcontrollers "” primarily STM32-based platforms "” and mentor a team of three junior engineers. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who thrives in a fast-paced, fast-fail engineering culture where ideas move quickly from whiteboard to product.*Key Responsibilities**Technical Leadership & Architecture*? Design, implement, and own communication protocol stacks (UART, SPI, I2C, CAN, RS-485, custom protocols) on STM32 and related ARM microcontrollers.? Define firmware architecture standards and drive technical decision-making across the embedded stack.? Evaluate or design communication protocols best suited to harsh mining environments (EMI resistance, real-time constraints, non-line of sight reliability).? Lead technical design reviews, code reviews, and architecture discussions within the team.? Collaborate with hardware engineers on PCB layout and functionality, signal integrity, and hardware-software integration.*Team Leadership & Mentorship*? Lead, guide, and mentor a team of 3 junior embedded engineers through day-to-day development tasks.? Define clear task breakdowns, set technical expectations, and track delivery.? Foster a culture of fast experimentation: encourage prototyping, controlled failure, and rapid iteration.? Conduct regular 1-on-1s, provide constructive feedback, and support junior engineers' professional growth.? Act as the technical liaison between the R&D team and project management / product stakeholders.*R&D Execution*? Drive proof-of-concept development for new embedded communication technologies applicable to mining equipment.? Own the full firmware development lifecycle: requirements, design, implementation, testing, documentation, and deployment.? Write robust, well-documented C/C++ firmware with real-time scheduler.? Develop and maintain hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) test benches and automated firmware validation pipelines.? Ensure reliability and safety requirements are met for industrial and underground mining deployment environments.*Agile & Process*? Participate actively in sprint planning, stand-ups, retrospectives, and backlog grooming.? Maintain and evolve engineering documentation, version-controlled codebases (Git).? Identify technical risks early and communicate mitigation strategies transparently to the team and stakeholders.*Required Qualifications*? 8 - 12 years of hands-on embedded systems engineering experience in a professional setting.? Experience in digital signal processing like Kalman filters, FFTs etc.? Deep expertise in STM32 microcontroller families (STM32F, STM32H, STM32L) ecosystems.? Proven track record designing and implementing communication protocols (CAN bus, RTU/TCP, RS-485, SPI, I2C, UART) in production-grade firmware.? Strong C programming skills; proficiency in C++ for embedded targets is a plus.? Experience using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and protocol analyzers for debug and validation.? Demonstrated experience mentoring or leading junior engineers in a technical capacity.? Familiarity with agile/scrum methodologies and fast-paced iterative development.? Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field.*Nice to Have*? Experience with wireless protocols (Bluetooth LE, Zigbee, LoRa, UWB) in industrial environments.? Background harsh-environment electronics design.? Knowledge of IEC 61508 or ISO 26262 functional safety standards.? Familiarity with PCB design tools (Altium Designer or KiCad) for hardware-software co-design.?
