Assistant Controller

Assistant Controller We are seeking a highly capable and hands-on Assistant Controller to support the Controller and VP of Accounting by managing full-cycle accounting for one major division or multiple smaller divisions. This position is ideal for a detail-oriented, solutions-driven accounting leader who thrives in a fast-paced environment and values daily collaboration with project teams and operations. The Assistant Controller will take full ownership of financial reporting, project accounting, job cost analysis, and compliance for assigned divisions while partnering closely with field and office operations teams. This role plays a vital part in ensuring accurate, timely financials and helping drive profitability and accountability at the division level. The ideal candidate brings a can-do attitude, proactively identifies process efficiencies, and is a natural problem solver with a mindset for continuous improvement. Key Responsibilities: Manage the day-to-day accounting operations for assigned division(s), including general ledger, job cost, AP/AR review, and payroll coordination. Ensure accurate and timely month-end close and reporting for assigned division(s). Collaborate daily with operations personnel to understand job performance, cost coding, billing cycles, and project status. Perform detailed job cost reviews and provide cost-to-complete projections in coordination with project managers. Review and approve vendor invoices, subcontractor payments, and project-related expenses to ensure compliance and accuracy. Assist with preparation of monthly WIP schedules, division-level financials, and variance reports. Maintain divisional compliance with internal controls, accounting standards (GAAP), and company policies. Coordinate with shared services (AP, AR, payroll) to resolve discrepancies and ensure accurate reporting. Provide financial insight and support to operations leadership to help manage budgets, forecasts, and cost control. Identify opportunities for process improvement and efficiency within division-level accounting functions. Support audits and financial reviews as needed, providing documentation and explanations related to assigned divisions. Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required. CPA or working toward certification preferred. Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience, including construction industry experience, with a minimum of 7-10 years of overall work experience in accounting. Solid understanding of job cost accounting, WIP schedules, and construction financial reporting. Prior experience managing financials for multiple business units or project teams. Proficient in construction ERP systems (e.g., Viewpoint Vista, Sage 300 CRE, or equivalent). Strong Excel skills and ability to analyze data to support project and division decisions. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work closely and proactively with field and office operations. Detail-oriented, highly organized, and able to manage multiple priorities effectively. Preferred Skills: Experience in heavy civil construction or multi-division construction companies. Understanding of AIA billing, subcontractor compliance, lien waivers, and retention tracking. Knowledge of fuel tax, sales/use tax, or other construction-related compliance areas.
