Psychiatric Attendant

Job Description The Psychiatric Attendant provides care, supervision, and security for forensic patients in a mental health institution. This role supports patient treatment plans, ensures safety and security on the ward, and assists with daily living activities. Key Responsibilities: Maintain on-ward security and safety, including monitoring patient behavior, conducting searches for contraband, and preventing patient escapes. Escort patients to and from off-ward activities and appointments such as meals, medical visits, and recreational or therapeutic programs. Intervene during crisis situations to prevent injury, applying restraints or assisting nursing staff as needed. Provide direct patient care including hygiene, grooming, feeding, dressing, and bathing assistance. Lead and participate in therapeutic and recreational activities to encourage socialization and independent functioning. Assist with housekeeping and unit sanitation, including cleaning floors, picking up trash, and laundering patient clothing. Document patient behavior, crisis interventions, and treatment progress in reports, logs, and communication records. Support nursing staff with treatments and patient preparation for psychiatric or medical care. Qualifications Ability to read and write common English vocabulary. Basic math skills including addition and subtraction. Knowledge of policies, procedures, and security practices related to forensic patient care preferred. Working Conditions Exposure to unpredictable patient behavior and communicable diseases. Requires flexibility to work shifts, weekends, and holidays. Education & Licensure High school diploma or equivalent.
