Controller

Controller Position Summary: We are seeking an experienced and strategic Controller to lead financial operations and ensure the accuracy and integrity of accounting records. Reporting to the Vice President of Accounting, this role will oversee general ledger management, project accounting, financial reporting, compliance, and internal controls across multiple job sites and entities. The Controller will play a key role in partnering with project teams and senior leadership to drive financial efficiency and performance. The ideal candidate brings a can-do attitude, proactively identifies process efficiencies, and is a natural problem solver with a mindset for continuous improvement. Key Responsibilities: Oversee all accounting operations including general ledger, job cost, payroll, AP/AR, and fixed assets. Ensure timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and year-end closings. Prepare and review internal financial statements, project profitability reports, and variance analyses. Partner with the VP of Accounting to develop and refine budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes. Lead and manage the accounting team, including staff accountants. Ensure accuracy of job cost reports, cost-to-complete forecasting, and WIP schedules. Maintain and enforce internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure compliance with GAAP and company policies. Coordinate with external auditors, tax advisors, and bonding agents for year-end audits and financial reviews. Support cash flow management by monitoring receivables, payables, and project billing cycles. Identify and implement process improvements to streamline operations and enhance financial reporting. Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA preferred. Minimum of 7-10 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a construction controller or similar leadership role. Experience in heavy civil construction accounting is strongly preferred. Strong understanding of job cost accounting, percent-complete revenue recognition, and project-based financial management. Proficiency in construction ERP systems (e.g., Viewpoint Vista, Sage 300 CRE, or similar). Deep knowledge of GAAP, internal controls, and financial reporting standards. Proven leadership and team development experience. Excellent communication, analytical, and organizational skills. Preferred Skills: Experience with multi-entity consolidations and intercompany transactions. Familiarity with AIA billing, retention, and lien requirements. Knowledge of state-specific construction compliance and tax regulations (e.g., sales/use tax, fuel tax credits).
