We are partnering with a growing engineering company near the Columbia, MD area that is seeking to hire an Assistant Controller to oversee the day-to-day accounting operations and provide critical financial insight to leadership. This is a hands-on role that combines tactical accounting work with team leadership, financial compliance, and strategic support. The ideal candidate has strong engineering/architecture or government contracting industry experience, supervisory skills, and the ability to drive process improvements in a fast-paced environment. This role offers strong growth potential, with the opportunity to advance into a leadership position overseeing the entire finance department. This position is onsite in office at least 4-5 days/week. Assistant Controller Key Job Responsibilities: Supervise, mentor, and develop the accounting team. Manage daily accounting operations, including AP, AR, payroll, billing, and general ledger. Ensure timely and accurate month-end and year-end close processes. Oversee project accounting, contract compliance, invoicing, and reporting in accordance with GAAP, FAR, and DCAA requirements. Prepare financial statements, management reports, and KPIs for leadership. Forecast and monitor cash flow, manage banking relationships, and support treasury functions. Support benefits administration and payroll compliance in collaboration with HR. Assist with annual budgets, forecasts, and financial modeling. Act as point of contact for auditors, banks, and external partners. Contribute to business development by reviewing pricing, proposals, and financial data. Assistant Controller Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a supervisory role. Strong knowledge of GAAP, FAR, DCAA, and project-based accounting. Hands-on experience with AP, AR, payroll, cash flow, and reporting.
