General Statement (Summary of duties & responsibilities):The Clinical Perfusionist performs the daily operations of the organ perfusion program at STA. This includes in situ and ex vivo perfusion technologies with a significant need for technical expertise related to critical care, operating room procedures, and perfusion technology. The incumbent must have a strong clinical background with the ability to understand complex and differing technologies used to increase organ donation. They will collaborate closely with other departments and transplant centers to ensure best organ utilization and continuous quality improvement. 24-hour call is required.Education and Work Experience Qualifications:Bachelor's degree required in nursing, perfusion, or other applicable field (or equivalent experience) required.Certification as a Certified Clinical Perfusionist through the American Board of Cardiovascular PerfusionMinimum of 5 years perfusion experience required.Trained on perfusion devices (ECMO, cardiopulmonary bypass, and related technologies)Proficiency with a variety of machine preservation technologies desired.Extracorporeal Life Support experience requiredAbility to work on-call and maintain 24/7 accountability is required.Ability to cope with high levels of stress and able to handle a heavy workload.Ability to travel in light and commercial aircraft or drive his/her personal automobile in order to meet all job duties and responsibilities. Current driver's license required.Essential Job Functions:Take 24-hour call to provide perfusion services to assigned organ donors according to operational need.Use both open and closed-circuit extracorporeal life support technology to optimize organ function both pre- and intra-operatively.Manage the donor intra-operatively to include volume, medication, and acid-base management (while managing extracorporeal support).Collaborate with Materials Management to ensure cost-containment, mission-readiness, and inventory management.Assist in organ packaging and labeling as needed by acting as a second verifier of donor information.Assist in in situ flushing of organs as needed.Assist in evaluating new perfusion technologies, researching their viability to increase organ donation, and implementing new processes.Assist in the development and revision of processes related to the perfusion department.Perform ex vivo perfusion of organs to optimize the opportunity for organ transplantation.Perform daily checks of perfusion equipment and compliance logs to ensure mission-readiness.Participate in (or lead) quality improvement (QI)/quality assessment (QA) efforts as directed in order to determine root causes of process variances and to recommend corrective action as needed to department leadership.Other duties as assigned.Non-Essential Job Functions:Note: These "non-essential job functions" represent job functions which the incumbent is responsible for performing. Will travel by plane or car for project- or donor-related activities.OSHA Category & Definition:Category 1 - The incumbent in this position has potential for occupational exposure.Equipment/Machinery Used:The incumbent is required to use various pieces of office equipment.
