Machinist Operator

All laboratory positions will have a focus on continuous improvement, which will involve awareness and acceptance of the changing tasks and duties, as required by the dynamic environment of the metallurgical field.This position exists to assist the laboratory director and machinist supervisor in the daily operations of the machine shop to ensure safety, quality, and productivity standards are achieved each day.*Essential Job Functions**Oversight*1. Machinist technicians will report directly to their shift supervisor and laboratory director.2. Machinist technicians shall consult with machinist supervisor and laboratory director on all job duties*Job Duties*1. Machine shop technicians will perform daily machine shop and laboratory tasks as directed by their immediate supervisors including but not limited to routine technical tasks,2. Machine shop technicians will operate cutting equipment to prepare metal specimens.3. Machine shop technicians will operate manual and lathes, mills, grinders to prepare metal specimens.4. Machinist technicians will work to ensure a safe and productive working environment consistent with safety standards.5. Metallurgical laboratory technicians will gather and record the dimensions of machined specimens.6. Metallurgical laboratory technicians will maintain laboratory equipment and supplies.7. Metallurgical laboratory technicians will schedule preventive maintenance.8. Metallurgical laboratory technicians may be asked to perform additional tasks as needed in the event of staffing changes, reorganization or to maximize operational efficiency.*Qualifications*1. In-depth understanding of metal specimen preparation, machining concepts, measuring instruments, and dimensional concepts2. HS diploma or GED certificate preferred3. Experience in a machine shop environment.4. Experience with cylindrical grinders and surface grinders5. Able to operate manual lathes.6.
