Twin County Regional HealthcareJOB SUMMARYThe Patient Access Specialist purpose is to interview patients or family members to obtain accurate demographic and financial information, explain consents, distribute patient education hand-outs and explain their contents, obtain consent and responsibility signatures and answer any questions the patient or family member may have.JOB REQUIREMENTSMinimum Education High school diploma or GED required. Associates degree in Administrative Support Technology, Business or Office Technology preferred. Medical terminology experience recommended. Proficient in use of software programs. Excellent customer service and telephone skills a must.Required Skills Excellent oral and written communication skillsFamiliarity with organization and functions of each hospital department. Ability to problem-solve effectively and handle stress in a positive manner. Maintain harmonious relationships with nursing personnel, medical staff, hospital administration, and all hospital departments. Ability to work varying shifts (evenings, weekends, holidays).ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSCustomer Service"”Meet and greet patients and families. Obtain accurate demographic and financial information. Explain treatment and responsibilities forms. Verify insurance benefits, eligibility, and obtain insurance authorizations when necessary. Obtain patient''s orders and requests. Review each for proper diagnosis. Uses interpersonal skills in dealing with co-workers, patients, and families. Participates in department meetings and attends all other required meetings. Collect deposits, co-pays, and deductibles. Obtains authorizations when necessary. Maintains log, to include EMTALA log prior to end of shift. Educates patients/families regarding patient rights, advance directives, and distributes patient guides. Provide coverage for switchboard duties when necessary. Completes additional tasks as assigned.FUNCTIONAL DEMANDSAbility to work 12 hours shifts required, day or night. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Must be able to sit long periods of time. Work requires physical ability such as walking, standing and bending. Must be able to talk and listen in order to communicate with patients. Must be able to read and write effectively. Exposure to blood, body fluids and hazardous wastes is frequent and one must carry out universal precautions according to hospital policy. May be exposed to injury by irrational and disturbed patients, patients with communicable diseases and/or potentially dangerous equipment.
