The Sr. Manager, Tax PositionSunnova Energy is searching for a Sr. Manager of Tax to serve as Sunnova''s subject matter expert, lead indirect tax compliance functions, related research, and implement strategic initiatives. This involves the preparation, or review, of tax work papers and tax returns using Avalara tax software. Additional responsibilities include reconciliations of general ledger tax accounts, involvement in tax audits, and various other tax-related research projects. Sr. Manager, Tax ResponsibilitiesEnsures corporate compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal tax obligations, emphasizing indirect taxes (e.g., sales tax, gross receipts tax, property tax, etc.)Maintains tax records (state registrations, tax permits, licenses, etc.) and supports tax and financial statement auditsProactively researches, assesses, and communicates relevant tax implications to support all related tax positions and prior to Sunnova entering a new state or territory; includes required documentation, exemptions, resale certificates, required forms, tax rates, municates and resolves tax notices with state and local taxing authorities in a timely manner; requests opinions when necessaryDocuments issues and research conclusions thoroughly for tax memos Coordinates with multiple departments as needed to determine and construct tax items, tax codes and tax rules in various accounting systemsTimely analyzes, processes, reviews, and approves tax compliance from transactional systemsReconciles sales tax payable account and processes journal entries Prepares annual budgets for indirect taxes and explain variations in those amounts from the prior year and current year actualsDevelop, coach, and mentor junior-level staffAnalyze the effect of tax accounting alternatives and proactively research laws and regulations to ensure correct application of new tax/accounting changes that may impact Sunnova''s businessMinimum RequirementsBachelor''s Degree, preferably in accounting, finance, economics, or a related fieldCPA10-15+ years'' experience with tax planning, research, and compliance8-10+ years'' of highly specialized subject matter experience8 - 10+ years'' manager experience with multiple reports5-6+ years'' senior manager experience with multiple reports Must have proven track record of timely analyzing and summarizing extremely large quantities of data using, for example, advanced Excel functions4+ years of public accounting experience3 - 5 years'' experience in an energy market.Public company experienceMust be able to demonstrate successful ownership (i.e., mastery) of the indirect tax function Preferred QualificationsMaster''s degree in accounting or taxationPrevious experience in renewable energy Working knowledge of PTMS, FinancialForce, and AvalaraStrong experience and proficiency in data analytic toolsPrior tax controversy experienceStrong experience in Subchapter K of the Internal Revenue Code and hypothetical liquidation at book value ("HLBV")Ability to pivot across broader tax areas, as neededAdditional Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesPositive, self-motivated and can-do personality - growth mindset Very strong organization and communication skills, verbal and writtenAbility to manage multiple projects while working under pressure and adhere to time constraintsEthical team player; always maintains the highest degree of integrityWorking ConditionsOpen-office environmentOvertime may be required during busy compliance timesLess than 1% estimated travel time BenefitsSunnova offers a generous employee reward package that includes:Comprehensive benefits, including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, healthcare flexible spending account, and 401(k) with employer petitive compensation & annual bonusPaid time off, including 10 holidays and Paid Parental LeaveCell phone allowance for many rolesFree access to onsite fitness center in Houston and/or discounted fitness memberships through health providerComplimentary garage parking in HoustonWe are an equal employment opportunity employer.
