Medical Laboratory Technician

General Purpose: This position is responsible for performing accurate quality-controlled diagnostic testing, analyzing and recording results, and calibrating and maintaining the equipment used. Essential Duties/Responsibilities: Performs nucleic acid testing per procedure manual. Performs proficiency testing as required and adheres to all quality, safety, and regulatory standards. Participates in inspection preparations. Prepares revisions to procedure manuals for approval as required. Job Qualifications: Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of appropriate handling of biohazardous materials. Knowledge of standard operating procedures and awareness of their impact on patient care/management. Computer Skills: Must possess intermediate computer skill in Microsoft Word and Excel. Communication Skills: Ability to communicate effectively through verbal and written communications. Interpersonal Skills: skill in working with all levels of the organization. Ability to work independently or in small or large groups settings. Ability to effectively identify and communicate to solve problems and issues. Ability to handle stressful pressure situations and meet required deadlines. Ability to maintain confidentiality in order to protect patient/client privacy and proprietary company information. Ability to maintain mental and physical focus required to perform tasks to required standards (quantity and quality). Ability to readily learn new techniques and methods. Education/Experience Medical Lab Technician or equivalent and 1-2 years of previous experience with clinical molecular or clinical lab testing preferred. Molecular experience is preferred but not required. ASCP certified or equivalent Tennessee certified of ability to apply. Work Environment: Normal Laboratory work environment. Employees in this position will receive safety training on Large Quantity Generator of Hazardous Waste Contingency Plan Implementation as it pertains to Emergency Evacuation Routes, Communication, and Alarms. Physical Requirements: Requires full range of body motion, including manual finger dexterity. Requires hand/eye coordination. Requires visual acuity and normal color perception. Requires moderate physical activity and the ability to sit and/or stand for extended periods of time. Requires ability to lift and/or carry items weighing up to 20 pounds. Ability to tolerate appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
