Lab Technician

JOB DESCRIPTION - Documents all lab work per established guidelines for the department (such as electronic lab notebook or project files) - Prepares basic samples, materials, equipment, and other required tools for laboratory tests or development. - Plans projects after receipt including compilation of needed project materials. - Performs basic technical tests, analyses, and research based on formulas and project requirements; tasks are more standard and require limited judgment within established guidelines. - Completes appropriate forms and documentation regarding research and development processes, tasks, results, and conclusions; receives direction from other technicians or chemists on specialized or complex issues. - Establishes time line for assignments based on priorities with assistance from their supervisor, identifies and resolves conflicts - Writes basic reports, outline procedures used and results obtained - Responds to standard questions and concerns from plants, research technicians, quality control, and other internal parties regarding product testing and related programs and services. - Uses computer for basic inputting, communication, and data analysis. - Demonstrates basic math skills to analyze data - Cleans, maintains and calibrates standard equipment and maintains a clean and safe working environment. May oversee one or more equipment processes within the laboratory. - Ensures compliance with department policies and procedures and applicable laws, rules, and regulations. - Adheres to all applicable ISO guidelines, quality standards, and internal test methods/procedures and maintains all required certifications. - Requires independent project management skills and troubleshooting ability. - Independently managing timelines and effective communication are crucial. - Performs other duties as assigned. REQUIRED: - Knowledge of basic math skills - Computer knowledge for basic inputting, communication, and data analysis using Microsoft Software Applications - Knowledge of basic paint concepts and property calculations. - PC skills; Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); and other applicable applications PREFERRED: - 5 or more years of experience in a laboratory - 5 or more years of experience in coatings industry EDUCATION: - High School Degree or equivalent and 2 semesters General Chemistry Preferred PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: - Must be able to sit, stand, hear, and see on a constant basis. - Must be able to walk, write, and type on a frequent basis. - Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. - Must be able to climb and descend stairs. - Must be able to bend, carry, reach, push, and pull on an occasional basis. - Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing. - May work in areas where toxic, flammable, and hazardous materials are present. - May be exposed to varying amounts of dust and dirt. - Work surfaces may include concrete. - Employee must be able to tolerate non-toxic paint odors and be able to wear a respirator as required. - Employee must be able to operate a computer and communicate via telephone. - May work in areas where noise level is such that hearing protection is required. - Some travel to other locations, meetings and/or seminars is required.
