Position SummaryUnder minimal supervision and direction, the Sr. Drilling Engineer participates in the planning and post appraisal of oil and gas well drilling for the Company. This role closely monitors well operations, tracks daily and hourly performance, and implements engineering processes. This role is responsible for remedying poor quality of drilling costs by reviewing cost estimates and budget-level cost data, and justifying major cost overruns.Essential Duties and Responsibilities Support the safe planning of the drilling phase of oil and gas wells through participating in risk assessments and implementing key outcomes into the Drilling procedure.Review well drilling techniques and procedures to ensure they demonstrate the Company''s commitment to a safe work environment.Ensure drilling programs, program amendments, and all supporting information including directional plans and permits, are prepared and delivered on time for rigs under their leadership.Support less experienced Engineers by answering their questions, giving additional support during trouble events on their rigs, and providing detailed coaching.Work cooperatively with various resource teams including Geology, Regulatory, Construction, Completions, Production, Procurement, Midstream, and service companies.Review planned costs and analyze actual costs for drilling activities. Review progress of daily reports and identify potential concerns and optimizations. Interact with Engineers and Operations team to avoid problems and achieve optimal results.Lead request for bids from vendors for services and equipment and ensure proper analysis is complete prior to recommending vendor for award.Perform post drilling analyses and identify processes for improvement.Liaise with Drilling Superintendents and Director Drilling to monitor drilling operations and perform contractor safety, quality assurance, and quality control reviews on site.Review and approve bottom hole assembly (BHA) design and optimization, troubleshoot and resolve problems encountered, and conduct root cause analysis of failures to optimize operation.Be available and involved to resolve trouble or issues on the rigs and to support operations.Review identified deficiencies and discrepancies in design and processes, and implement process improvement plans. Adhere to the Seven Committed Behaviors of the Drilling & Completions (D&C) team.Other Duties and Responsibilities Ensure the drilling rig schedule allows proper planning and takes all drilling or permitting issues into consideration.Participate in pad design process.Review and approve invoices, as appropriate according to Delegation of Authority.Provide support to Regulatory for any necessary permit application information and requests.Research outside operations and perform competitor studies for best practices and learn from the Company''s peers, network and make appropriate contacts to improve internal process.Perform other duties as assigned.Qualifications Required Education, Experience, Licensure Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering.Seven (7) years of experience across Drilling Operations and/or Drilling ternational Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC) or International Well Control Forum (IWCF) Supervisory level Well Control or obtained within three (3) months of hire.Foundational experience with Major or Super Independent Oil & Gas Company.Successfully drilled in at least one unconventional basin.Possess valid driver''s license and clean driving record (MVR) that meet Company''s Insurance qualifications to operate Company vehicle. Preferred Education, Experience, LicensureBachelor of Science degree in Mechanical or Petroleum Engineering.Ten (10) years of experience in a Drilling Engineering or Operations position with at least four (4) years in horizontal shale plays.Minimum two (2) years of experience as Drilling Foreman.Practical experience and training in accident root cause analysis or Taproot process.Experience working closely with multiple technical disciplines.Practical experience or training in risk analysis. Required Core Competencies - Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Competent understanding of directional drilling principles and directional well planning.Strong, demonstrated abilities in overall well optimization and continuous improvement. Understanding of cement properties, cementing procedures, drilling fluids and application.Ability to make timely decision, troubleshoot well issues, and find real time solutions.Proficient at Landmark or other well engineering software design packages.Basic knowledge of drilling rigs and equipment capacities and the ability to properly select the right tools for the job.Ability to use knowledge of pore pressure and fracture gradient determination/prediction for casing design and well control.Ability to learn to apply risk analysis and principles of simultaneous operations to design pads in order to facilitate multiple operations in a safe and efficient manner.Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, with demonstrated ability to effectively communicate across field and office peers.Demonstrate high ethical and professional behavior and decision making when dealing with contractors.Work effectively with multi-disciplinary teams.Demonstrated ability to implement continuous improvement methods and processes, and entertain new or alternative ideas.Ability to conduct research and analysis and report results.Maintain a positive attitude. Job is performed in an office and out in the field overseeing or observing operations.This position may be subject to:Extreme cold and heat: temperatures typically below 32o F or above 100o F for periods of more than one hour. Consideration should be given to the effect of other environmental conditions as wind, rain, snow, and humidity.Noise: there is sufficient noise to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above ambient noise level.Vibration: exposure to oscillating movements of the extremities or whole body.Hazards: includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to chemicals.Physical Demands The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms. The employee will occasionally lift, push, carry, and/or move 20 pounds. Be able to bend, stoop, crouch, kneel, etc. occasionally.Regular amount of traversing through challenging terrain to evaluate project sites, conditions, manually inspect slopes or perform work.Occasionally enter tight spaces or other areas, by the use of stairs, ladders, or other access devices. Travel Requirements Occasional travel will be required to other locations.Occasional travel to Company''s field operations.
