Job Description

The Department of Health, Safety and Environment is seeking an Occupational Safety Officer who assists and reports to the Associate Director of Health, Safety, and Environment in the development and implementation of an occupational safety program for Johns Hopkins Medicine on the East Baltimore campus. Specific Duties & Responsibilities: Under the direction of the Associate Director, implements programs which will assure compliance with all safety, health, and fire regulations required by Federal, State and City governments. Makes recommendations which will ensure compliance with relevant regulations. Investigates incidents involving fire, unsafe conditions and/or occupational injury. Communicates with staff, faculty and management to correct physical or procedural deficiencies that may be causing accidents, injuries or regulatory non-compliance. Generates a written report of the findings. Investigates incidents involving employee injury to determine cause and potential corrective actions and generate a written report. Participates in the development and implementation of training programs in the area of safety and health, evacuation and fire prevention for employees in all areas. Perform surveys in work environments throughout the Johns Hopkins Medicine campus. Make recommendations for abatement in the context of JHI operations and compliance with pertinent regulations. Accompanies representatives of government, insurance companies, and accrediting officials making safety, risk and fire inspections. Reviews plans for new construction, renovation of existing facilities and outages to ensure that they are in compliance with safety and fire codes. Meets with engineering staff and management to resolve any problems. Participates in the development of emergency plans for all areas. Assist in the development of fire drills, fire prevention manuals and other instructional tools that will aid in the control of fire hazards. Conducts training of Johns Hopkins staff to provide information on procedure to mitigate hazards or to ensure compliance with the regulation. Represent the Department of Health, Safety and Environment on standing committees within Johns Hopkins. Performs related duties as required.
