Our department has four divisions that help neighbors resolve neighborhood concerns. Together, we help improve the quality of life in Houston neighborhoods through people-focused programs and strong community partnerships. The Inspections and Public Service Division cleans up neighborhoods using building codes, sign codes, nuisance violations, and beautification projects. The division''s four sections work with community partners and neighbors to respond to their concerns and improve their quality of life. We know that neighbors are our greatest assets in neighborhoods. We put neighbors first and make it easier for everyone to take action.DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The Code Enforcement Officer Trainee will perform field inspections to assist in the enforcement of Chapter 10 of the City of Houston''s Code of Ordinances. The inspector will be trained on City of Houston Chapter 10 ordinances, assist senior officers in completion of site visits, and occasionally perform administrative work related to site visits. During site visits, the Code Enforcement Officer Trainee may interact with the general public and educate citizens regarding Chapter 10 code violations on their properties or in their neighborhoods. The Code Enforcement Officer Trainee will learn to provide testimony in Municipal Court and collaborate with law enforcement to complete site visits.Additional duties may include:Conducts on-site inspections to check for code compliance and violations.Handles phone inquiries and enters data into a computer system.Keeps abreast of new code changes and materials.Responds to routine inquiries from the general public, civic groups, contractors, technical professionals, and businesses.Assists in maintaining files of records, reports and documentation of inspections and enforcement activities.May perform other general office activities as required.May perform other additional duties as assigned.Desired Employee AttributesSpecific Job Skills:Excellent customer service skillsExcellent written and verbal communication skillsAbility to efficiently plan driving routesKnowledge of construction and/or grounds maintenance Personality:The desired candidate will be motivated to improve peoples'' lives and want educate fellow citizens of Houston. WORKING CONDITIONSThere are routine discomforts from exposure to moderate heat, cold, moisture/wetness and unpleasant air conditions. The position may involve routine exposure to soiled materials and light chemical substances such as cleaning solutions. Requires the ability to make simple gross motor responses within large tolerances. The position routinely requires lifting of moderately heavy items, such as typewriters or records boxes (up to 40 pounds) and/or very long periods of walking on rough surfaces on a routine basis.
