Job Description

Maintain the vessel's engine room and equipment in a state of readiness to perform work for customers as needed. Perform start up and shut down, troubleshooting, and heavy maintenance of vessel power and propulsion systems. Job includes pulling heavy lines and hoses, working on oil and cargo barges, general vessel maintenance, and other tasks that may be assigned from time to time. Perform work as requested by Captain.The job responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:Engine Room work:Preventive maintenance and underway repairs on main engines and gears, pumps, motors, plumbing, deck machinery [including towing winch(es)], and auxiliary generator unitsPerform routine periodic maintenance about tug and on barge as neededMaintain proper liquid levels for tug operationsPerform lubrication servicesMonitor and record operating condition of engine room equipmentMaintain daily log with proper readings and timesEngine room must be kept clean and ready for operation at all timesWash down engine room weekly and at every decrewFuel tugDeck work:Make up all tows as directed by Captain or MateUse the radioKnot tying, line/wire splicing, make up and handle heaving lines and messengersMake up and throw heaving linesProperly tie off barge towsGive proper direction and distance signals and informationPaint inside and outside of tug on an on-going basisLoad suppliesGeneral cleanup of tugs and barges.General cooking and galley duties as may be requiredFill out material requisitions and work order formsChief unlimited licenseDDE Unlimited USCG license requiredMinimum five (5) years as Chief EngineerPICAbility to learn and make application of safety awareness, injury prevention, and firefightingCarry out essential job responsibilities and duties listed above with a minimum of directionMust be able to understand and use information contained in cargo information cards and material safety data sheetsOperate all firefighting and lifesaving equipment aboardMust complete firefighting training within 6 months of hireMust have a valid first aid certificateMust have CPR trainingComplete HAZWOPER training within 30 days of hireValid TWICWork aboard boats and barges using pike poles, heavy lines, winches, mechanical tools for repairs, paint, thinner, paint brushes/rollers, paint chipping tools, cleaning solvents, kitchen utensils/cookware, power cords.Exposure to all weather conditions (rain, ice, snow, heat, wind, heavy seas, etc.)Ability to live in confined spaces and get along with crew members for extended periods of time.Must be able to perform the functions set forth in the attached job analysis and physically fit enough to pull heavy lines/hoses, lift, carry heavy items, climb onto barges and up and down ladders, and bending and twisting during boat/barge tie up.Must not be afraid of heights.Ability to adapt to a variety of schedules and hoursAble to work weekends, holidays, and at night.
