Position: Research Scientist - Solid State Electrolytes and Si Anodes Reports To: Solid State Team Manager Location: Waltham, Massachusetts A123 Systems, LLC is a leading developer and manufacturer of lithium-ion batteries and battery systems for the transportation and commercial markets. For additional information please visit Position Overview A123 Systems, LLC has an exciting opportunity for a detail-oriented team player to join research & development efforts to integrate solid state electrolyte materials with high energy density anodes for future scale up to A123's manufacturing processes. The ideal candidate will have a strong preference for hands-on lab work with a record of achievement in the areas of solid-state electrochemistry, Li-ion batteries, materials chemistry, and/or interfacial surface science. Primary job directives will include developing scalable processes for the incorporation of high energy density anodes, comprising solid state sulfide electrolytes and silicon active materials, into conventional lithium battery manufacturing processes. The successful candidate will require exceptional communication skills and the initiative to see projects to completion. Primary Responsibilities Develop novel anode process and cell technologies compatible with solid state electrolytes and processes. Build small-scale prototype cells to measure key metrics and demonstrate technology developments. Work with external collaborators to design, direct, and carry out experiments to achieve project milestones. Plan experiments, document results, prepare reports, and present findings to leadership. Contribute to generation of intellectual property. Specific Skills and Background Required Ph.D. with 0-5 years of industrial experience, ideally in the lithium ion battery field. Research experience with a variety of novel anode materials and designs including Si anodes. Knowledge of lithium-ion battery manufacture, characterization, and failure analysis. Comfortable with a 'hands-on' approach to getting things done. Capable of independently planning and executing complex and long-term work initiatives. Ability to clearly and confidently communicate through oral and written modes. Ability and willingness to keep meticulous written and electronic records of experimental activity. Desired Experience with solid state electrolytes and batteries, with a preference for sulfide-based chemistries. Expertise with a range of advanced processing and analytical techniques for powders and slurries. Experience using pouch cells, EIS and three-electrode configurations for electrode design optimization. Ability to think creatively and analytically to solve technical issues. Experience with DOE (Design of Experiments) methods and Minitab software. Expertise in one or more advanced analytical techniques. A123 is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer
