Job DescriptionThe manager will be the lead for our practice of Design Program Managers (DPMs) within the digital design organization. The manager will be responsible for developing a team and community of practice including hiring, coaching, mentorship, and professional development.Design Operations' mission is to provide structure, systems, and support for the design organization. The DPM Manager is instrumental in evangelizing a shared vision for our cross-discipline design groups, creating internal alignment with design leaders and cross-functional partners. This role supports a group of DPMs who each partner with the Executive Director of Experience Design responsible for a large portfolio of product/feature work. The Design Program Manager (DPM) role is a support role that facilitates planning and collaboration for shared design team members on agile release trains. In addition to managing DPMs, the manager will be responsible for driving the creation of shared documentation, especially as it relates to workflow, process, and change management for designers working within an agile methodology (SAFe). This role identifies the need for shared systems and processes, and will coordinate with peer managers and DPMs to create and evangelize those solutions.Design Operations has a responsibility to balance design thinking and systems thinking methodologies, understand the complex needs of internal and partner groups, and to develop processes that are both sufficiently structured for consistency while also flexible enough for individual team interpretation.This role reports to the Director of Design Operations within the Digital Design group. RESPONSIBILITIES Manage a team of Design Program Managers who each support an Executive Director and several cross-functional design teams. Encourage staff development by providing leadership and mentorship to team members. Foster a positive team culture that encourages continuous improvement, psychological safety, trust, and transparency.u2028 Create and demonstrate best practices, leading by example and coaching other team members on agile principles and good program management in an agile environment. Additionally, support the translation of agile principles to the craft of design.u2028 Collaborate with design directors, discipline managers, train leads, team members, and external stakeholders to identify the need for shared processes. Define and document how creative shared service teams work within our organization and our agile framework. Likewise, lead initiatives to continually mature and refine our design and agile processesu2028 Define and measure team health, success metrics, and maturity models for cross-functional design teams in partnership with Design Program Coaches (Scrum Masters).u2028 Partner with the agile transformation office (ATO) to create a shared understanding of design practices with partnering roles within in the organization, including but not limited to: agile coaches, solution train engineers (STEs), release train engineers (RTEs), engineering scrum masters, product owners.u2028 This role may also perform the duties of the business unit lead DPM: facilitating cross-train alignment and leadership meetings to enable collaboration and problem solving with large-scale teams or across the design leadership group.Personal Attributes: Strong critical thinker who makes balanced, insightful decisions.u2028 Fact-based problem solver with the ability to evaluate alternative courses of action and make sound management decisions.u2028 Collaborative in nature with the ability to establish working relationships across the senior management team, business units, as well as with external advisors and constituentsu2028 Self-starter, problem solver; comfortable jumping in as needed to support the programu2028 Servant leader that can quickly create spheres of influence to relentlessly improveu2028 Willing to try new things, check and see if they worked, and then change and adaptu2028 Creates a safe environment for everyone to bring their whole selves to work every dayu2028 Ability to navigate through ambiguityRequired Qualifications 5+ years of leadership experience with proven collaboration and facilitation skillsu2028 8+ years of experience working within a complex, matrixed organizationu2028 Awareness of and an interest in embodying the principles of Agile Strong meeting and cross-functional facilitation skills Experience with systems thinking: solving problems for the whole and planning for continuous improvement.u2028 Strong analytical, oral and written communication, presentation skillsu2028 Ability to lead with influence, setting direction at times for those not under direct line of managementu2028 Technical aptitude to support program's use of work management and collaboration tools including Miro, Airtable, Rally, Figma, and more.u2028 Excellent time management, communication (written and verbal), and organizational skills.COVID RequirementsCOVID-19 Vaccination RequirementCVS Health requires certain colleagues to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (including any booster shots if required), where allowable under the law, unless they are approved for a reasonable accommodation based on disability, medical condition, religious belief, or other legally recognized reasons that prevents them from being vaccinated.
