What can you expect?Our lab processes thousands of veterinary samples a night, which we receive from veterinary clinics across the US. What type of samples? Glad you asked! We receive blood, urine, and fecal samples; we accession them into our computer system, and then we run diagnostic tests on those samples. The results are then shared back to the Veterinarian, and they can then formulate a treatment plan if the animal is sick. You would be a crucial part of the process of helping to keep pets happy and healthy - how great is that?What can you expect?You will be using automated analyzers, microscopes and other laboratory diagnostic tools to perform analyses and tests that diagnose animal illnesses, injuries and diseases in support of veterinarian animal treatment. You will be responsible for setting up and running lab tests, and reading and releasing results according to SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures). You can expect to specialize in one or more of the following areas:HematologyTesting cell-related components of blood samples to enumerate and identify their cellular components, including the microscopic evaluation of blood smears and the use of automated and manual counting techniques.UrinalysisAnalysis and evaluation of chemical and microscopic components of urine samples, using automated instrumentation and manual techniques.Chemistry/EndocrinologyTesting blood and body fluids for various analytes, utilizing automated instrumentation.ParasitologyExamining samples to identify parasites, utilizing fecal flotation and various microscopic techniques.Immunology/SerologyTesting blood and other samples for the presence of viral and bacterial disease by detecting antibodies (AB) or antigens (AG).MicrobiologyProcessing clinical samples for the identification of bacteria and fungi using automated and manual methods.PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction)Examining samples for the presence of specific substances (often bacteria) using molecular diagnostic methods.Schedule:This is a long-term temporary position where you will be working 40 hours/week. The scheduled shifts will likely have a start time of 11pm or 12am, and the shift would end at 7:30 or 8:30am, depending on your start time. Flexibility to stay longer as needed a huge plus.Weekend Rotations are required. So, one week, you''ll work Monday through Friday nights with Saturday and Sunday off; the next week, you''ll work 4 weeknights plus Saturday night, and have one night off during the week and Sunday night.The shifts and hours may vary slightly depending on business needs.Reliable and dependable attendance is an essential function of the position.What do you need to succeed?Education:High School Diploma or equivalent required, 2, 3 or 4-year degree in Science-related field preferred.We''d love to see Certification as a Veterinary Technician (RVT, LVT, CVT - Registered, Licensed or Certified through American Veterinary Medical Association accredited program-AVMA) or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) (American Society of Clinical Pathology-ASCP), or military equivalent - but it''s not required.Experience:Typically 0-1+ years'' experience.Required Skills and Abilities:Laboratory skills, with experience setting up, running and reading lab tests and operating lab instruments.General science background, including hematology/chemistry helpful.Attention to anized with the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.Ability to work independently and as part of a munication skills, both verbal and written.Positive, can-do attitude.Knowledge of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) as appropriate.Supervisory skills, if a lead position.Personal computer skills, including strong typing ability and proficient use of Microsoft Office.Pay: These positions pay $21/hrPhysical Demands:Extensive sitting, phone and computer use.Capable of standing continuously for up to 2 hours.Extend and reach with hands and arms and use hands and fingers.Occasionally required to climb, balance, bend, stoop, kneel or crouch.May be required to lift, move and carry up to 50 pounds.Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.Hearing acuity sufficient to effectively communicate with customers and Employees via telephone and in person.Ability to communicate verbally on the phone and in person.Fluency in the English language.Extended hours may be required.Some travel required.Work Environment:Laboratory environment with potential biohazards present.Potential for exposure to agents known to cause zoonotic disease in humans and the use of potentially hazardous chemicals as defined by the National Hazard Communication Standards.
