We boldly go.Job Summary:The Materials Engineer supports and develops HVAC&R components and systems in Trane Technologies'' Materials and Chemistry Lab in La Crosse, WI. This job will require general knowledge in the properties and uses of metals and alloys such as steels, copper, aluminum and other non-ferrous metals. Responsibilities include the investigation of metal shaping, joining, fatigue, general performance under design stresses and system conditions. Core Job Duties & Responsibilities (others may be added): Provide metallurgical support and materials usage direction for new technology, new product development, cost improvement, and reliability projects for HVAC&R systems and components. Develop and interpret materials related specifications, drawings, and engineering standards. Guide and direct metallurgical evaluations and write technical reports to document results. Lead and participate in engineering projects using Six Sigma tools and contribute materials expertise to part design, material selection, and process development. Provide technical support, management, and direction for corrosion testing, material specification strategies, supplier qualifications and related activities HVAC&R products. Interact closely with multi-disciplinary teams including design engineers, Quality, Reliability, Manufacturing, and Product Development to support failure resolution, technology, and product development efforts where corrosion is a factor. Identify corrosion risks, develop abatement strategies, and execute validation plans for the implementation of new technologies while managing and directing corrosion testing and evaluation for the application of new technologies for non-ferrous material systems.Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor''s Degree in Materials Engineering (or similar degree) is required.Essential Skills or Knowledge: Strong background/experience in metallurgical/materials engineering Experience with failure analysis and metallurgical testing techniques using destructive and non-destructive test methods Proficient in problem solving with excellent written and verbal communication skills Strong interpersonal skills, capable of independent supervision Computer literate with knowledge of Microsoft Office software and other generally available software programs. Less than 10% travel Physical Demands:While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to operate computer, keyboard, and telephone. The employee is required to frequently walk and sit. The employee is occasionally required to stand. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Occasional travel may be required. This position will also require assisting in the review of laboratory testing in a typical laboratory environment.
