The Department of Chemical Engineering (ChemE) has more than 26 faculty, 16 postdocs, and 14 staff. ChemE has a long tradition of openness and innovation. The UWs ChemE has an outstanding opportunity for a Facilities Manager to provide program support for labs and fabrications, project and space management, training and safety, asset management and other duties, and COVID-19 and emergency preparedness. This position reports to the Administrator. RESPONSIBILITIES Lab Support & Fabrications: Exercise expertise in operation, troubleshooting, and repair of a variety of laboratory equipment, including equipment requiring interpretative knowledge. Support maintenance of equipment or arrange for repair by other campus facilities, if appropriate and reasonable amount of time is available. Design or modify instrumentation, based on specifications provided by the faculty. Provide support to teaching faculty for installation, repair, minor modifications and maintenance of the departments Unit Operations Laboratory (Unit Ops), the Surface & Colloid Science Lab, and Shared Instruments Facilities (SIFs) equipment to include data acquisition devices, analytical instrumentation, experimental apparati, and other specialized equipment. Provide occasional technical support as needed, including training for TAs in equipment usage. Provide technical support and training in the student shop. Project & Space Management: Ensure that Benson Hall is clean and well maintained and work with leadership to plan for and improve space to meet department needs. Serve as the Building Coordinator for Benson Hall as well as the liaison to Facilities Services and Custodial Services. Follow-up with requests to ensure that work is complete, accurate, and timely. Coordinate and communicate information to building occupants. Manage all projects involving alterations to space, construction, and renovations in Benson Hall. This includes planning timelines, potential impacts, cost estimates, managing established project budgets, and coordination with service providers and related. Update ChemE owned space in Space Manager as room usage changes. Manage desks in Benson Hall, working with the Administrator. Move furniture, install keyboard trays, assemble desks/chairs, and similar DIY expert related tasks, as assigned. Assist with event setup and support as requested. Training& Safety: Improve existing safety processes and implement/enforce safety procedures and accident prevention programs, in collaboration with others. Promote understanding and support of UWs and departmental safety policies. Provide effective orientation and training to new employees and others, as needed. Serve as the department liaison to EH&S to ensure compliance with campus, state, and federal safety standards and codes. Represent ChemE on UWs Organizational Health and Safety Committee (Group 9). In conjunction with the parties involved, ensure that accident/incident reports are prepared for all events in ChemE; work with faculty responsible for the lab where the accident/incident occurs to analyze why it occurred and what corrective action is necessary. Ensure that chemical inventories are up-to-date in the MyChem database for all labs. Assist research groups with chemical waste disposal as needed. Work with faculty to ensure that labs have a lab safety manual that contains: a chemical hygiene plan, standard operating procedures, and material safety data sheets for all products used in the lab. Ensure that the Laboratory Personal Protective Equipment Hazard Assessment is in place for each lab and that lab personnel have copies. Facilitate EH&S safety audits of ChemE space to identify safety and housekeeping hazards. As new grants are funded, consult with faculty to anticipate safety needs (i.e., storage for flammables, personal protective equipment) before lab supplies or equipment is ordered. Identify EHS safety classes that should be attended by ChemE personnel; verify attendance for new students, staff, and faculty as they join the department. Identify those with first aid/CPR training; encourage renewal of skills on a regular basis. If appropriate, arrange for specialized training classes or safety seminars to be held at Benson Hall to advise employees and supervisors concerning requirements for compliance with safety codes and regulations. Facilitate EH&S evacuation drills to practice individual and building responses to a variety of emergency situations (i.e., chemical spills, fire, and earthquake). Asset Management & Other Duties: Ensure maintenance, repairs, and support of all equipment, including equipment located in off-site facilities. Work collaboratively with faculty and the Computing and Technology Manager on teaching equipment. Ensure that an accurate inventory is kept of all equipment and materials. Perform monthly testing/servicing of the autoclave to ensure that it is functioning properly. Ensure that all equipment is tagged with a UW Property sticker and entered into the UWs equipment inventory system. Perform the annual physical equipment inventory for the department. Serve as a member of the Infrastructure Committee and provide technical expertise. Responsible for regular disposal of surplus property. Other duties as assigned. COVID-19 & Emergency Preparedness: Lead efforts to develop business continuity plans. Create documentation and implement after approval by the Administrator. Develop and ensure adherence with the site-specific COVID-19 Prevention Plan, as needed. Serve as evacuation director for Benson Hall. Arrange for regular evacuation drills. Ensure sufficient wardens on each floor. Serve as on-site contact for the department during reduced occupancy due to COVID-19. Help distribute information and updates to building occupants related to COVID-19 prevention and response efforts. Establish and monitor adherence to access control, building operations, egress routes and emergency procedures as they relate to the University Plan. Professional Growth: Professional development is very important to the culture of the department, and it is essential that employees demonstrate accountability for their own professional growth and competency by seeking opportunities and activities that improve skills to support the department. The Facilities Manager will stay current on emerging information and technologies by attending workshops/trainings and developing relationships with peers. It is expected that new ideas and best practices will be incorporated into solutions and plans so the entire department can benefit. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Bachelors degree in chemical/mechanical engineering or other technical field. Four years of relevant experience can substitue for a Bachelor''s degree. At least two years of experience in safety or lab management or related facility manager experience. Additional requirements: Demonstrated experience managing complex maintenance and repair projects. Flexibility and motivation to learn new skills and techniques. Basic machining skills, welding, CAD, CNC programming. Knowledge of and hands on experience with data acquisition and process control. Experience in developing and executing in safe laboratory management. Excellent troubleshooting skills. Effective written and oral communication skills. Attention to detail and good organizational skills. Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment. Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum requirements. WORKING CONDITIONS Ability to lift up to 30 lbs. and the ability to move furniture and equipment as needed. Work to meet specific deadlines, accommodate special events, or activities taking place outside of normal working hours may be needed. The Facilities Manager must be able to work a flexible schedule on occasion with advance notice.
