OverviewThe Paramedic - Operating Room is responsible for providing safe, reliable patient care as defined by the Iowa Bureau of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Scope of Practice for the Critical Care Paramedic and as authorized by the Anesthesia Medical Director. The Paramedic Operating Room functions as a member of the surgical team to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical, therapeutic, and diagnostic procedures. The Paramedic - Operating Room collaborates with the team to ensure that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. The Paramedic -Operating Room possesses advanced knowledge and clinical skills in airway management, cardiac arrhythmias and crisis management, anesthetic medications and anesthesia machines, equipment, and supplies that utilize an expanded paramedic scope of practice, encompassing the Critical Care Paramedic scope. They possess anatomical knowledge related to placement of invasive lines and regional anesthesia to effectively assist the anesthesiologist to perform these procedures safely. Why UnityPoint Health? Assists the anesthesiologist with assigned duties during cardiac surgery. Promptly completes documentation to assure an accurate legal record of patients care. Delivers high quality care utilizing the nursing process while demonstrating knowledge and clinical skills of the specialty required on assigned unit in accordance with established policies, procedures, and standards of care. Utilizes holistic approach (considering biopsychosocial, spiritual, educational, safety, and related criteria) appropriate to the age of the patients and families served in the assigned service area. Delegates and provides direction for other healthcare providers and hold them accountable for their involvement in the plan of care. Utilizes critical thinking in making independent judgments and maintains responsibility and accountability for the knowledge of conditions of assigned patients. Integrates patient/family teaching throughout the hospitalization, including the plan and goals of care, pre- and post-operative procedures, diagnostic procedures, and discharge teaching.
