The Service Leader serves as an ambassador for their specialties and is seen by all stakeholders, including surgeons, as the first line of contact about issues related to those surgical specialties. The Service Leader holds primary responsibility for coordinating the equipment, instruments and supplies used in the surgical specialties he/she is responsible for. The Service Leader is accountable for assuring that staff are qualified, competent and proficient in caring for the patients undergoing surgical procedures in their surgical specialties and is a clinical expert in circulating and scrubbing for cases in his/her surgical specialty. Performs all essential job functions as a Register Nurse. Develops and maintains relationship with all surgeons represented in the surgical specialties that he/she supports. Develops and maintains relationships with all stakeholders involved in their surgical specialties. Serves as the first line of communication in the chain of command for troubleshooting and solving issues that arise within their surgical specialties. Escalates issues appropriately using the chain of command when necessary. Assures that preference cards accurately reflect the EIS needed for cases within his/her service(s). Reviews cases scheduled in her/her specialty in advance and assures that any and all resources needed to complete the surgical procedure will be available for the procedure. Collaborates with SPD leaders to assure that EIS are cared for properly, managed properly and are available when needed. Assists with inventory management to assure the EIS are available in adequate quantities to support the surgical specialties served. Maintains clinical expertise in the surgical procedures performed within their surgical specialties. Collaborates with all stakeholders to assure that staff working in the surgical specialties that they support have the knowledge and skills to perform proficiently in those cases. Serves as a preceptor and excels at precepting staff in the scrub and RN circulator role. Assists other department leaders in assuring that standards are consistently met.
