Summary This is an open and continuous announcement which will be used to fill Registered Nurse positions in Acute Care (Med/Surg) at the Dayton VA Medical Center. The presence of a location on this announcement does not necessarily indicate a current vacancy. Applications will be reviewed and referred upon request from the service as vacancies arise. Responsibilities The employee practices as an RN and applies the nursing process to Acute Care inpatient care. This individual is responsible for the development, implementation, and sustainment of infrastructural systems and processes related to supporting clinical staffs'' ability to effectively provide coordinated, evidence-based care to Veterans. The employee practices as an RN on the Surgical and Medical (SAM) unit or on the MED 1 unit. These units are within the Acute and Specialty Care section of Nursing Service. The staff nurse is responsible as a team leader or nursing team member for a group of assigned patients on their shift. The RN delivers theoretically and scientifically based nursing care to an assigned group of veterans. They are constantly building upon current clinical competencies. Serves as an advocate for the veteran and is obligated to demonstrate nonjudgmental and nondiscriminatory attitudes and behaviors that are sensitive to veteran diversity. The RN is accountable to function as an effective team member, team leader, preceptor and/or charge nurse. Work Schedule: Work Schedule: Day Shift (7:30am-8:00pm) or Night Shift (7:30pm-8:00am) including weekends and holidays. Employees assigned to the 12 hour shift, must work one 8 hour shift per pay period. Qualifications Basic Requirements: Citizenship: Citizen of the United States. (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.) English Language Proficiency: RNs appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d). Graduation from School of Nursing: Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant. -The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC), an accrediting arm of the National League for Nursing located at 61 Broadway, 33rd Floor, New York, New York 10006 or call (800) 669-1656 extension 153. The NLNAC accredits all levels of nursing programs. A registered nurse (RN) will have a current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (such as Puerto Rico) of the U.S. or in the District of Columbia. The appointing official may waive this registration if the RN is to serve in a country other than the U.S. and the RN has registration in that country (e.g., Philippines). The RN must maintain a current, full, active, and unrestricted registration to continue employment with VA. Physical Demands: Per VA Directive and Handbook 5019 - a physical examination will be conducted based on the physical requirements of the position. A physical examination prior to placement is required. The Dayton VA Medical center is a major interdisciplinary teaching facility, serving medical, surgical, inpatients and outpatients. There is a large outpatient psychiatric population, with admissions for medical co-morbidities. This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continues walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The employee may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The employee may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The employee must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: -Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with NO additional nursing practice/experience. -Nurse I Level II - An Associate Degree or Diploma in Nursing, AND approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an Associate Degree or Diploma in Nursing, AND a bachelor degree in a related field, with NO additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), with NO additional nursing practice/experience. -Nurse I Level III - An Associate Degree or Diploma in Nursing, AND approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an Associate Degree or Diploma in Nursing, AND a bachelor degree in a related field, AND approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, AND approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master of Science in Nursing or related field, AND a Bachelor of Science in Nursing or bachelor degree in a related field, with NO additional nursing practice/experience. (If MSN was obtained in a Bridge Program, no BSN is necessary.) -Nurse II - A Bachelor of Science in Nursing, AND approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an Associate Degree or Diploma in Nursing, AND a bachelor degree in a related field, AND approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master of Science in Nursing or related field, AND a Bachelor of Science in Nursing or bachelor degree in a related field, AND approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a doctoral degree in nursing, and NO additional nursing practice/experience; OR doctoral degree in related field, and NO additional nursing practice/experience. (If MSN was obtained in a Bridge Program, no BSN is necessary.) -Nurse III - A master''s degree in nursing or related field, AND bachelor degree in a related field, AND approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or related field, AND approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience.
