Overview:Hiring Immediately for Part Time BackerThe Part Time Backer directs buses during backing by motioning with hands and/or handheld flashlight; utilizes clear backing and stopping signals in order for bus to avoid hitting fixed objects or pedestrians; assists supervisory staff with monitoring arrivals and departures. At the direction of SQMs, provides assistance to bus operators including boarding and de-boarding passengers.Responsibilities:Directs buses during backing by motioning with hands and/or handheld flashlightMotions with hands and/or flashlight while directing buses that are backing out of stallsMust utilize clear backing and stopping signals until operator places the bus into drive and pulls awayBe alert and aware to operators requiring spotters; observant of flashers, back up lights, signals and or horns in order to assist operators with staying on paddleAssures safety procedures are followed at all timesStand at left rear corner of bus in order to be seen by the driver and far enough back (between 12-15 feet) to be seen by other busesMust wear designated safety vestPerforms other duties as requiredAssists SQMs with monitoring arrivals and departuresAssists supervisory staff by maintaining time logs detailing the arrivals and departures of buses operating on specified route(s) Assists bus operators boarding/de-boarding passengers when neededAssists supervisory staff with ensuring the timely departures of buses on routes traveling through the appropriate transportation terminalMaintains communication and relays any pertinent information to SQM''s / DispatchersAt direction of SQMs/Dispatchers, provides assistance to Bus Operators including boarding/de-boarding passengersAs needed, and at the direction of SQMs / Dispatchers, occasionally assists Bus Operators with the boarding and de-boarding of passengers at terminal locations and in addressing passenger questionsOccasionally may be required to assist in crowd controlPercentage of Time for Essential Duties and Major Responsibilities:Directs buses during backing by motioning with hands and/or handheld flashlight 70% Assists supervisory staff with monitoring arrivals and departures 20% At direction of SQMs/Dispatchers, provides assistance to bus operators including boarding/de-boarding passengers 10%Qualifications:Must be able to direct any bus that is backing in order for bus operator to avoid hitting pedestrians or fixed objectsHigh School Diploma or GED and valid NY driver''s license requiredMust be able to direct bus while walking backward or forward and motioning with hand, carrying a flashlightMust possess good communications skillsMust have the ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with peers, supervisors and outside publicMust be able to work in outdoor climates and be subject to fumes, extreme heat/cold, and other environment factorsMust be able to endure prolonged standingMust be able to pass a pre-employment physical examination including a FTA drug testPurpose and Nature of Work Relationships:Backer responds to vehicle operators attempting to back bus out of stalls at transportation terminal(s).As needed and directed, works with passengers helping them to board and de-board bus.Unique Working Conditions:Works outside in possible extreme weather conditionsTools, Equipment and vehicles used:Handheld flashlight / Stop signPhysical Demands:The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
