Major DutiesClassification: Non-Exempt, BargainingOutside Plant Technicians place, rearrange, repair, and remove all outside plant structures. Outside Plant Technicians drive to and from each work location in Company vehicles, and perform their work out of doors in all weather conditions. They must be knowledgeable in and abide by all National Electrical Safety codes and Company Safety PracticesResponsibilities* Climbs poles and ladders, enter tunnels, buildings, vaults, trenches, crawl spaces or manholes to place, maintain or remove equipment.* Perform construction work such as digging holes, placing poles, laying cable in the ground, unreeling, pulling and stringing wire and cable from pole to pole. Place fiber cable from Central Office through conduit or attach pole lines to customer business or distribution points in the loop.* Dismantle, move or remove aerial, underground or building wire, cable, associated equipment, poles and hardware.* Work in remote and rough terrain locations.* Operate power equipment such as compressors, pumps, blowers, winches, etc., and hydraulic equipment such as aerial lifts (buckets), diggers-derricks mounted on trucks, etc.* Work with heavy-duty power equipment and hand tools in the construction, repair and maintenance of outside plant facilities.* Load tools and equipment onto trucks and/or trailers.* Perform various splicing operations on Polyethylene Insulated Conductors (PIC), connected cables and/or lightguide (Fiber).* Connect wires and cables to terminals, and attach or detach various kinds of hardware to wires, cables, buildings or poles.* Use test equipment to check for gas in manholes; may have to empty water and other debris from manholes.* Move and/or lifts weights of 100 pounds or more.* Perform work with other utilities such as gas, electric, cable TV, water, sewage. Works safely in consideration of self, civilians, and other utility workers.* Work outside and will be exposed to all weather conditions as well as dirt, grease and wood preservatives, poison ivy, oak, bee stings, etc.* Wear appropriate safety equipment and follow established safety practices and procedures.* May be assigned to work out of town for various lengths of time.* Work in various surroundings and may have contact with customers.* May be required to perform additional duties and tasks as required by the Company.Qualifications* Tests - Results obtained in standard tests for this position must meet minimum requirements established by the Company, in accordance with Company policy.* Physical Requirements - Medical Department evaluation and ability to perceive differences in wire and cable colors is required. Department of Transportation Physical and Drug Screen.* Job Performance and Attendance Record - Satisfactory performance rating & attendance/punctuality record in present job.* Tours - May be required to work day, evening or night shifts and overtime, emergency call-outs, weekends and holidays as assigned. Hours to be worked are determined by seniority, job requirements and qualifications.* Driver''s License Information - Must have a valid state Commercial Driver''s License Class A or B in state where work is performed. Satisfactory driving record also required. Ability to drive vehicle with manual transmission may be required. A Department of Transportation Certificate may be required if driving a Company vehicle over 10,000 pounds. Compliance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations as prescribed by the U.S. Department of Transportation is required. Random Drug Testing is administered for CDL drivers.* Security Investigation Information - Must meet the standards of a Security Investigation.* Additional Factors to be considered - Outside Plant Technicians are required to work in teams of two (2) or more technicians to perform their job.Education/Experience:* High School diploma or GED required.Other InformationTraining:* Initial classroom training of approximately 3 to 5 weeks which may involve travel and/or overnight stays.Physical Demands and Work Environment:* The physical demands here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
