SUMMARY:The Assistant Plant Manager is responsible for general supervision of all phases of plant operations including production, quality control, maintenance, receiving, and shipping. The Assistant Plant Manager strives to maximize productivity and minimize costs to fulfill the facility''s potential and meet its goals, and coordinates overall daily operations, planning and long-range improvements in accordance with corporate goals and policies. Work with Plant Manager (PM), Production Manager, and Fleet Manager (FM) in all areas of operations to coordinate and schedule processing of canned, frozen, and fresh products. Manage and review with PM and QA facilities to ensure GMP''s and HAACP plans are being followed for product safety. Work with PM and Maintenance Manager to plan and oversee capital projects.GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:Assists PM to manage all plant operations in accordance with the facility''s capacity.Assists PM to develop and ensure compliance of overhead and direct and indirect labor budgets.Monitors operational expenses and explores ways to reduce costs while maintaining product quality.Works closely with the Environmental Health and Safety Manager to ensure all members of the manufacturing team are aware of safety policies to provide a safe workplace for our employees.Procures the maximum available quality product with profit potential in accordance with the facility''s production capacity.Works closely with PM and Maintenance Manager to plan and oversee the implementation of all capital projects.Establishes, maintains, and monitors production standards and procedures for product quality, recovery, labor costs, and salability.Helps PM and HR Manager to recruit, hire, train, supervise, and conduct reviews for key personnel.Follows all company safety policies and procedures.Responds to change productively and handles other duties as required.OFF-SEASON DUTIES:Work with PM and Area Manager to confirm a processing plan and product mix for processing season.Work with PM on calculating packaging needs based upon processing plan and product mix.Work with Production Manager, Office Manager, and PM to recruit, hire, and schedule travel plans the number of processors needed as described in the processing plan for the season.Work with PM and the plants various departments to ensure pre-season ordering is occurring on budget and scheduled for plant operations.Assist PM with annual overhead and labor budgeting.Assist PM and Maintenance Manager with planning scope and estimating costs for capital projects.OTHER IN-SEASON DUTIES:Assist the PM with any human resource issues as directed in season.Review daily labor (indirect and direct labor) and daily production spreadsheets to ensure recoveries are in a correct range and labor dollars are being spent efficiently.Review and communicate in season packaging inventories to ensure the facility does not run out of materialsEDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:This position requires a highly motivated, well organized, detail-oriented self-starter with strong leadership and motivational skills, extensive knowledge of Alaskan fisheries and products. Must work well independently, make important decisions under extreme pressures of fishing season, and work productively despite sleep deprivation. Must have effective written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills to clearly communicate plant goals and guidelines and supervise large groups of people with varying backgrounds and skill levels. Must also have a strong knowledge and understanding of OSHA, EPA, DEC, FDA, DOLL, and buyer specifications. Must have a thorough understanding of quality requirements for seafood canning and freezing operations and perform fresh and frozen herring roe sampling. Computer literacy required.BA degree in Business Administration or related field, or equivalent experience. Also requires Thermal Process Control Certification and FCC Radio Operator License.Minimum of five (5) years of seafood production experience or equivalent, with an additional three (3) years of increasingly responsible management experience. Position requires the ability to stand,sit at a desk,walking around office andplant,lifting,and carrying packages up to 50 pounds,utilizing fine dexterity.
