The Correctional Officer is responsible for carrying out the directives of the Sheriff by organizing, directing, maintaining an orderly and secure jail, ensuring compliance by inmates with established rules and regulations, and coordinating the operations of running a safe and secure jail facility.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSEnsures jail security.Directs inmate activities, manages the safety of the public and inmates, mediates disturbance in jail with inmates, counsels inmates, and serves meals and activities.Maintains records, writes reports, maintain filing of jail records, record incident bookings, and medication deliveries, and review and correct records.Maintains and completes individual criminal files, and enters necessary data on prisoners into the computer according to the Department of Corrections Detention Information System, along with updated modifications and/or deletions, as requested by the Jail Administrator.Executes procedures to ensure the safety of the public and the inmates within the jail.This individual will need to identify medical emergencies, both physical and psychological, and handle them accordingly and may be required to administer medication to inmates as well as administer drug testing.At times will be responsible for ordering supplies, and groceries and doing food preparation for inmates.Directs maintenance of jail facility including general maintenance, repairing lights, cleaning, and laundry.Access to Not Public Data The incumbent may encounter not public data in the course of these duties. Any access to not public data should be strictly limited to accessing the data that are necessary to fulfill the employment responsibility. While data are being accessed, the incumbent should take reasonable measures to ensure the not public data are not accessed by individuals without a work reason. Once the work reason to access the data is reasonably finished, the incumbent must properly store the not public data according to the provisions of the Minnesota Government Data Practices Act (Minnesota Statutes, Chapter 13).The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned this classification. Experience preferred.EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIREDAt least one year of related experience which includes the following skills and abilities:Must have tact, courtesy, good character, and good judgment.Must be able to work effectively without supervision.Working knowledge of codes, processes, and operating requirements of the communication system and multiple computer environments.Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, subordinates, emergency service providers, other county and city staff, and the general public.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.The qualifications listed above are guidelines. Other combinations of education and experience could provide the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform this job.WORKING CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENTThe position has good working conditions in general but is a diversified job requiring sustained mental effort related to organizational issues, planning, and technical areas. The position has rotating shifts, which include working some holidays and weekends. This position is a 24/7 position.The individual will encounter moderate to high emotional strain or tension. There is sustained exposure to sitting and standing. There is continuous exposure to computer keyboards and video screens and moderate exposure to lifting up to 40 pounds.Works with a diverse group of inmates who have chemical dependency, aggressive history of violence, psychological disorders, HIV, TB, Hepatitis, etc., and may also come into contact with bodily fluids.
