SummaryUnder the direction of the Laboratory Director, the Section Head coordinates, supervises and provides leadership support to staff that report to them. They serve as a technical and administrative resource for their designated section of the laboratory. Section Heads oversee all operational, technical and staff activities for their designated section. They are responsible for the development and coordination of activities that promote the highest level of quality laboratory processing and analysis achievable. They assure that current standards of laboratory practice are consistently met. They effectively consult and collaborate with other health care team members. They are responsible for performing clinical laboratory procedures to include phlebotomy which require the exercise of independent judgment and responsibility in those categories in which he/she is qualified by education, training and experience. Job specific criteria will vary depending on the clinical area assigned. The Section Head is responsible for the performance of testing activities that promote the highest level of quality laboratory processing and analysis achievable. The Section Head must have knowledge of CLIA regulations, maintain competency in the area which he/she is responsible, serve as a resource for the staff that report to them, assist with new employee training, provide technical supervision, review results, assist with coordination and supervision of implementation of new testing and participate in the Laboratory Quality improvement plan. The Section Head is responsible for staff oversight in conjunction with the Laboratory Director.This job description in no way states or implies that these are the only duties to be performed by this employee. He or she will be required to follow any other instructions and to perform any other duties requested by his or her supervisor.EducationBachelor''s Degree in Medical Laboratory Science other science degrees accepted in conjunction with a combination of experience and training (as defined by CLIA Interpretive Guidelines §493.1449).Associates Degree in Medical Laboratory Science other science degrees accepted in conjunction with a combination of experience and training (as defined by CLIA Interpretive Guidelines §493.1449).Certification, Registration, and LicensureCertification required: MT(ASCP) or MLS(ASCP) or MLT(ASCP) or equivalentExperienceAt least one year clinical experience as defined in CLIA standards §493 under qualifications. Must have enhanced knowledgebase in laboratory area of expertise. Demonstrates evidence of recognizing the value of working successfully amongst team dynamics. Must be knowledgeable of laboratory regulations and proficient in aspects of continuous quality improvement. Experience in understanding concepts of laboratory medicine and how this knowledge can best be applied, in direct collaboration with the patient care team. High level of experience with Laboratory Information Systems. Supervisory experience preferred.ResponsibilitiesReviews methods and procedures within Laboratory Section. Makes recommendations to the LabTechnical Operations Manager regarding changes in procedures and policies, new tests, etc.Evaluates and institutes new testing procedures, with the Medical Director. Evaluates and makesrecommendations to the Technical Operations Manager, the Director of Laboratory Services, and Medical Director on new analytical equipment for the capital equipment budget.Coordinates the monthly, weekly and daily staff schedules. Performs daily timekeeping activities.Coordinate staffing in section to enable staff to attend regular scheduled General Lab Meetings.Responsible for the on boarding, competence and development of technical staff.Responsible for monitoring and meeting annual section financial goals.Ensures quality in all aspects of patient care. Responsible for compliance with regulatory requirements.Conducts regular staff meetings within section, documenting attendance and minutes, communicatingchange in policies, procedures, and provide open forum and opportunities for staff to discuss issues and problem resolution.Maintains currency in practice within the section and area of expertise.Demonstrates adaptability, flexibility and timeliness in managing workload and processes required to meet technical and administrative needs.Takes responsibility for individual performance goals.Performs other duties as assigned.Concord Hospital is an Equal Employment Opportunity employer.
