Assists in interviewing and selecting staff for patient care unit.Works with Manager in providing leadership and direction in accordance with organizational departmental goals and objectives.Provides for professional growth and development of staff. Assists Department Manager in establishing a climate conducive to meeting educational needs and efforts of the unit. Tracks compliance of assigned staff with mandatory meetings, in-services and tests. Oversees and coordinates orientation of new staff. Acts as preceptor when needed. Conducts unit meetings on a regular basis according to unit standards.Participates in completion of performance evaluation of staff. Assists Manager in counseling employees, developing staff and, as appropriate, utilizing disciplinary process.Supervises professional and/or technical unit staff and student nurses on shift. Determines staffing mix and amount based on budgeted hours and patient acuity. Assigns duties based on patient unit needs and individual expertise of staff members. Responsible for tracking assigned staff attendance and tardiness in accordance with attendance standards.Responsible for creating staffing schedules and approving staff requests for time off and ensuring appropriate unit staffing coverage.Collaborates with ancillary support services to provide a safe, comfortable, clean and secure environment for patients, staff and visitors.Assists in maintaining budgetary limits in both operating expense and FTE by utilizing limited resources appropriately. Responsible for meeting staffing standards on assigned unit/shift.Oversees maintenance of supplies necessary for providing emergency and routine nursing care.Promotes open communication and continuity of care between shifts, floors, physicians and departments through verbal reports, charting, patient care plans and assisting with transfers. Willingly accepts assignments and demonstrates flexibility in working different areas as needed.Adheres to and provides assistance in orientation to and practice of emergency procedures, fire drills, evacuation procedures, and internal/external disaster plans.Provides input in formulating patient care policy and procedures and standards of care for patient care services.Participates in unit''s Performance Improvement plan to improve organizational performance.Evaluates patient care through assessment, planning, intervention, re-evaluation, written documentation, observation and comparison to established standards. Organizes patient care and ensures continuity of care based upon knowledge of patient needs. Assures patient and significant others participation in plan of care including teaching and discharge plans. Demonstrates effective interpersonal skills appropriate to the age, type and development level of patients.Administers nursing care to patients, as needed, to maintain clinical skills, assess particular patient requirements and support staff. Sets priorities and assures the completion of care through documentation for all assigned patients/duties within shift.Assumes role of patient advocate respecting guidelines found in Patient Bill of Rights. Communicates with patient, significant others and health professionals regarding care to patient. Maintains confidentiality of patient record and patient, physician, staff, or other healthcare provider information, whether verbal or written.Serves as clinical resource person and participates in assessing patient/family status to plan patient''s care. Assures patient and significant others participation in plan of care, including discharge planning.Participates in and provides direction for teaching of patients and significant others.Cooperates with clinical instructors in planning, implementing and evaluating students'' clinical experience.Assumes responsibility for own personal continuing education and developmental needs; attends meetings, workshops and conventions to enrich personal knowledge, growth and skill in providing clinical care. Completes mandatory educational requirements in time specified.Serves on committees in patient care/nursing, hospital-wide or professional nursing organizations.EDUCATION EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Indiana. BSN required. Two years experience in Med/Surg nursing or related acute care nursing department required. First line management experience preferred. Must maintain current CPR and ACLS certification.
