Job Description: General Statement of Duties The Natural Resources Science Lab Technician at Mount Wachusett Community College reports to the Science Lab Technician Supervisor and carries out job responsibilities in support of the Natural Resources Degree Program. This Lab Technician will be responsible for the set-up and breakdown of lab experiments as well as the ordering and receiving of supplies and materials required for said labs. The Technician will have joint control of the greenhouse facility in collaboration with MWCC''s Facilities Department, IT Department, the Division Dean and the Lab Tech Supervisor. The Technician ensures and observes all lab safety protocols, follows proper disposal of all hazardous waste, orders supplies, maintains inventory, schedules instrumentation inspections and works closely with instructors to ensure appropriate delivery of student lab activities. Writes and reviews standard operating procedures. Ability to communicate effectively. Responsibilities Receive, label and analyze samples (blood, toxic tissue, soil samples, plants, seedlings, fertilizers, mulch, lumber, compost, etc.);Design and execute laboratory testing according to standard procedures, make observations and interpret findings;Conduct experiments under defined conditions to verify/reject various types of hypotheses using refined scientific methods;Organize and store all chemicals substances, fluids and compressed gases according to safety instructions;Record all data and results in specified forms (paper and electronic) with accuracy and attention to detail;Maintains equipment and assists in ordering laboratory supplies;Ensures that all safety guidelines are followed strictly at all times and maintains a clean and orderly environment;Performs quality control tests in the lab as well as on-site when necessary;Assist with testing and calibrating lab equipment in preparation for specific tasks;Perform quality control tests on samples;Completes purchase requisitions, orders supplies and shops at a local store when necessary. For Complete ''Union Specifications'' please click HERE Requirements: MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must have at least (A) one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical or professional experience in laboratory work in a recognized clinical, medical, hospital, chemical, water quality, public health, biological, bacteriological, marine sciences or materials testing laboratory, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below. Substitutions: I. An Associate''s degree or higher with a major in medical technology, chemistry, bacteriology, food science and technology, environmental science, chemical or environmental engineering, wastewater technology, oceanography or the biological sciences may be substituted for the required experience. II. The successful completion of one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, education toward a degree at a recognized medical or dental school may be substituted for the required experience. III. The successful completion of training in a recognized school or hospital course or an American Medical Association (AMA) approved training program for laboratory technicians or medical technologists may be substituted for the required experience. IV. Registration as a medical technologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, the International Society for Clinical Laboratory Technicians or American Medical Technologists or as a bacteriologist by the National Registry of Microbiologists may be substituted for the required experience. REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND APTITUDES: Proven experience as Lab Technician for environmental, natural resources and agricultural educational settings;Experience operating electrical and nonelectrical laboratory equipment and in handling potentially dangerous substances (flammable liquids, infectious bacteria, biohazards, fertilizers and soil samples, etc.);Experience operating machinery and equipment used in agricultural settings such as weed whackers, trimmers, rototillers, small tractors and hand tools;In depth knowledge of laboratory best practices;Ability to lift, carry, push/pull objects and materials, weighing up to 50 pounds, for relocation as directed;Working knowledge of MS Office (especially Excel) and database systems;Ability to work autonomously and under pressure;Valid driver''s license and own transportation in order to drive to off campus lab sites, and retrieval of supplies. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Associate Degree or higher in appropriate science field;Two plus years in appropriate laboratory experience.
