SUMMARY The duties of a lead dental assistant are among the most comprehensive and varied in the dental office. The lead dental assistant performs many tasks requiring both interpersonal and technical skills. Lead dental assistants greatly increase the efficiency of the dentist in the delivery of quality oral health care and help lead the team with providing additional training and support to those who need it.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS• assisting the dentist during a variety of treatment procedures.• taking and uploading dental radiographs (x-rays).• asking about the patient''s medical history and taking blood pressure and pulse.• serving as an infection control officer, developing infection control protocols, preparing and sterilizing instruments and equipment.• helping patients feel comfortable before, during and after dental treatment.• providing patients with instructions for oral care following surgery or other dental treatment procedures, such as the placement of a restoration (filling).• teaching patients appropriate oral hygiene strategies to maintain oral health.• taking impressions of patients'' teeth for study casts (models of teeth).• performing office tasks that often require the use of a computer.• communicating with patients efficiently (e.g., scheduling appointments and answering the telephone).• helping to provide direct patient care in all dental specialties, including orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics and oral surgery.• Reviewing the schedule throughout the day to make sure the back office is running smoothly.• Keeping track of inventory and placing orders when supplies are low.• Working closely with the office manager to overcome any possible obstacles that the office might face.• Troubleshooting equipment problems and contacting the tech team to fix any issues.• Setting up the back office staff for success by providing additional support and training when needed. REQUIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES• Strong verbal and written communication skills.• Perform duties in accordance with practice policies.• Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor, handle situations with grace and poise.• Familiarity with dental terminology needed to effectively communicate with patients and team.• Be punctual and participate in team meetings.• Perform tasks with accuracy, efficiency, and by specified deadlines.• Assist team members if needed; view cross-training duties with a ''team-first'' mentality.• Maintain strict compliance with State, Federal, and other regulations including OSHA and Texas Dental Board.
