The University of Maryland Department of Neurosurgery is seeking an experienced Nurse Practitioner accountable to the nonsurgical management and care of adult neurosurgical patients on the cranial service in the outpatient clinical setting. Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to; comprehensive assessment and examination of patients, review of diagnostic imaging studies, and management of nonsurgical patient care. Provides continuity of patient care by facilitating and coordinating communication between the multi-disciplinary team, patient, and patient''s support system to ensure effective patient care and safety. Integrates relevant research and best practice to ensure high quality care.The University of Maryland Department of Neurosurgery exists to face challenges to improve lives. Registered and currently recorded with the Maryland Board of Examiners of Nurses and Certified as a Nurse Practitioner in the State of Maryland.DEA and CDS eligibleCPR/BLS requiredA minimum of 3 years'' experience as a Registered Nurse is requiredPrevious Neuroscience experience strongly preferredA minimum of one-year experience as a Nurse Practitioner requiredDemonstrates ability to promote professionalism through involvement in professional organizations, teaching, research, publishing, and/or certification in the area of specialtyDemonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population(s) served.Demonstrates highly effective verbal and written communication skills to interact with patient families, departmental units, medical and nursing staff on all essential matters.Maintains updated mandatory trainingESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:Comprehensive assessment and examinationManagement of nonsurgical careCoordination of careIn clinical collaboration with the attending physician, provides day to day organizational and clinical direction and leadership of the healthcare team.Performs comprehensive history and physical assessment for patients admitted/scheduled to service/practice setting.Orders, obtains, and interprets appropriate diagnostic tests.Establishes medical diagnosis based on history, assessment, and diagnostic findings, with MD collaboration as needed.Assessment and ExaminationIndependently performs comprehensive history and physical examinations for all new patients; focused examinations as necessary for returning patientsReviews and interprets relevant diagnostic studies and imaging to aid in coordination of treatmentTriages and provides appropriate action/response for patient questions/concerns using clinical judgement and critical thinkingSafely provides hands on patient care not limited to wound checks, in office procedures, etc.Medical ManagementOrders relevant diagnostic imaging studies specific to patient''s chief complaint and findings on physical examinationManages medications and nonsurgical treatmentsCoordination of CareCommunicates with multidisciplinary team members to ensure continuity of care utilizing multiple modalities of communication (Epic, TigerConnect, Outlook)Collaborates with inpatient surgical team to facilitate post discharge needs and appointmentsActs as point of contact and liaison for patients to streamline and facilitate appropriate referrals/appointmentsAttends multidisciplinary conferences to obtain recommendations from other specialties to facilitate additional appointments/treatments in appropriate time frame
