SUMMARY: Responsible for the development, design, and oversight of new mechanical system products and solutions for the Maritime Research and Development Department. GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Development of mechanical systems and equipment design proposals and solutions to support concept vessel designs, efficiency improvements, and evalution of alternative fuels. Focuses on investigating and understanding industry trends, applications and technologies, and areas of potential technical disruption. Develops and brings to market new products and services, maximizes Crowley''s ability to benefit from trends and changes in the industry, obtains competitive industry advantage in the market, and provides innovative solutions for the company and customers. Stays abreast of industry trends, news, accidents, technological advancements, and current and future regulations to ensure leadership is informed of opportunities and possible disruption. Uses and directs the use of advanced computer software to design engineering solutions that comply with company procedures and meet current port state and class society guidance and requirements. Conducts or directs, the development of analytical, environmental, operational, or performance studies in order to develop designs for marine mechanical systems, such as marine propulsion systems, HVAC systems, and piping systems. Evaluates and selects equipment and materials. Analyzes data in order to determine feasibility of product proposals. Prepares, or directs the preparation of plans, product or system layouts and detailed drawings and schematics, estimates, design and construction schedules, and contract specifications, including any special provisions. Prepares, or directs the preparation of, technical reports for use by engineering, management, or sales personnel. Coordinates activities with regulatory bodies in order to ensure construction, repairs and alterations are at minimum cost, consistent with safety. EDUCATION: Bachelor''s degree in naval architecture, marine engineering, mechanical engineering or related field. EXPERIENCE: 10+ years experience as a naval architect, marine engineer, or mechanical engineer. TECHNICAL PROFICIENCY: Proficient in AutoCAD and Microsoft Office products, including Excel, Outlook and Word. COMPETENCIES: Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to prioritize, organize and perform multiple work assignments simultaneously. Ability to evaluate process effectiveness and develop change or alternatives. Ability to review project work, quantities, costs, accuracy of specifications, completeness, and constructability. Ability to interpret architectural/engineering drawings, specifications, codes, standards, and regulatory requirements. Ability to effectively manage projects that may vary in nature and scope. Knowledge of and ability to utilize design techniques, tools, and principles involved in the production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models. Knowledge of principles, practices and concepts of project management. Knowledge of federal, state and local safety regulations, protocols, and procedures as they pertain to environmental health standards. Knowledge of the concepts, principles, and practices of engineering as applied to innovative research applications. OTHER: Professional engineer license strongly preferred. Ability to travel to work sites, vendor facilities, conferences, and vessels in operation. JOB SCOPE: Position impacts multiple business units/segments. WORKING CONDITIONS: Works both inside an office environment and also outside in conditions of both high and low temperatures. May be exposed to odors, dust, dirt, mechanical hazards, high noise levels and potentially dangerous equipment. Must be able to crouch and stoop to g et into areas with restricted headroom and be able to climb ladders.
