And that starts with our employees.Job DescriptionUnder the supervision of the Clinical operations manager, this position assists in planning and implementing clinical research studies as assigned: working directly with patients and their families providing a wide range of state-of-the-art imaging, performing a variety of screening and technical diagnostic tests, and facilitating all implementation phases of new studies and the ongoing coordination and maintenance of open and closed studies.The position arranges and coordinates all clinical trial activities and plays a key role in assisting the Principal Investigators in recruiting and overall coordination of patients for clinical studies. The day-to-day duties for this position is directed by the Clinical Research Supervisor. This position will work closely with the Photography and Imaging Supervisor, the Clinical Research team, the Principal Investigators, members of the department, study sponsors and monitors, and the institution, to support and provide guidance on the administration of the compliance, financial, personnel and other related aspects of all ongoing clinical studies.This position works directly with patients and their families providing state-of-the-art imaging in retina, cornea, and glaucoma clinics, as well as general imaging requests. This position provides and accepts feedback with regard to submission of ophthalmic images to various reading centers for review and certification. This position works directly with the reading centers to perform imaging and deliver data under specific guidelines mandated by the reading centers.This position follows established professional standards and procedures, helps facilitate patient flow and performs a variety of screening and technical diagnostic tests including manual lensometry and manual keratometry. This position assists with patient contact lens removal/ insertion and instilling eye drops as directed by physician.PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Demonstrates proficient use of the following research duties and functions:Responsible for assisting in the recruitment of study participants. Assesses potential patients and eligibility for inclusion in a particular protocol based on protocol requirements. Reviews all eligibility and ineligibility criteria in the patient''s record. Verifies information with the physician. Interviews patients to obtain information for eligibility assessment, explain the study, and obtains signature for the informed consent anizes strategies for recruiting study participants, and screening study participants for eligibility on the telephone, in the clinic and other settings as pletes follow up with study participants in prescribed settings as required. Performs necessary tests as needed and as appropriate to level of training such as EKGs, Walk tests, pletes record abstraction of source documents, conducting required study measurements and completing study Case Report Forms in accordance with best practice methods. Conducting a QC check of completed CRFs prior to submission for data entry; coordinating resolution of all data queries. Completing data entry as warranted.Performs basic laboratory activities as neededComplies with all institutional policies and government regulations pertaining to human subjects protections. Maintains regulatory binders, case report forms, source documents, and other study documents. Monitors the occurrence of clinical adverse events, reporting any to the (PI), the study sponsor and Institutional Review Board.Reviews protocol with the clinical team and ensure clinical team is aware of their roles and responsibilities.Responsible for assisting with Institutional Review Board (IRB) requirements for each study including meeting institutional educational requirements, submitting documents for review, adverse event reporting and annual reviews.Maintains patient confidentiality per HIPAA regulations and keeps study information in a safe and secure location. Adhere to FDA Good Clinical Practice Guidelines.Identifies and resolves problems with protocol compliance by notifying investigator and the protocol sponsor as necessary.Arranges necessary tests and procedures in accordance with protocol requirements and reports results to the anizes and participates in site visits with the study sponsor to review completeness and accuracy of study documentationMaintains inventory of all study suppliesCertifies and participates in all current clinical trials for all ophthalmic specialtiesCertifications expected within 6 months of hireSubmits images to reading centers and keeps archives of submission data.Responsible for maintenance of equipment certifications for clinical trials.Demonstrates proficiency with or a learning-knowledge of some or all of the following imaging systems:Zeiss, Optovue, and Heidelberg OCT systemsTopcon Retinal Cameras for the use of fundus photography, fluorescein angiograms.Haag Streit Slit Lamp CameraNidek Stereo Retinal CameraKonan Endothelial Cell Count/BiomicroscopySLR Digital Camera Systems and LightingCorneal imaging with the Heidelberg Rostock Confocal Scanner.Participates in image management for cornea research.Demonstrates proficiency with or a learning-knowledge in use of the following technician requirements:Prepares patient for the physician''s evaluation by obtaining history, chief complaint, document medications, pertinent questions and necessary information.Performs various screening tasks including visual acuity, PAM, BAT, auto and manual lensometry, auto and manual refraction, auto keratometry, Ishihara plates, Amsler grid, stereo test, muscle balance, D-15 color test, and Contrast Sensitivity test.Performs various diagnostic tests as determined necessary through patient assessment; pupil and anterior chamber depth evaluation, applanation tonometry, including Goldmann and Tono pen, confrontation and Humphrey visual fields, and corneal topography.Assists patient with contact lens removal and stills diagnostic eye drops as directed by the physician to evaluate level of pressure in the eye and to dilate pupils.Has knowledge of ocular pharmacology, including identification and proper use and installation of diagnostic medications.Performs other similar and related duties as required or plies with all local, state and federal regulations and laws governing the performance of this position within the Ophthalmology plies with all OSHA standards, including but not limited to handwashing.Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.Study-specific certifications for clinical trial participation is expected within 6 months of hire.QualificationsJOB KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:Experience in an ophthalmic or healthcare related settingExcellent interpersonal skills necessary to work effectively with patients, understand their needs, and be responsive to the elderly and sensory handicapped. Also requires the ability to work closely and effectively with physicians and other clinical staff, including residents, fellows, attending physicians, and nurses.Knowledge of eye terminology, basic anatomy and physiology of eye preferred.High degree of detail, organizational talents, data collection and analysis skillsStrong computer /graphic skillsAbility of priority quickly and appropriatelyKnowledge of or aptitude for biological sciences preferred.Proficiency and ability to work independently in all areas and provide smooth patient flow.Excellent communication skills required for effectively explaining the exam process to patients and attempting to allay their concerns and apprehensions.Must demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to assess the needs of patients of different age populations in order to provide care appropriately.Knowledge of laser software and laser safety, where applicable.Energetic, self-motivated, and ability to work in a fast paced environment.Bilingual in Cantonese, Mandarin, or Russian preferred.Current CPR certification preferred.EDUCATION:Bachelors degree in related field preferredEXPERIENCE:2-5 years experience in research related activitiesExperience as an ophthalmic photographer OR ophthalmic technician demonstrating proficiency in areas of ophthalmic photography, digital imaging systems, computer-generated text slides and graphics, and audio/visual projection is strongly preferred.Experience with computers and scheduling systems preferred.Certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) in good standing or at least one year I an ophthalmic practice preferred.Certified Retinal Angiographer (CRA) and/or Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT-C) certificates from the Ophthalmic Photographer society preferred.An equivalent combination of education and experience, which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed above, may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements.LICENSES, ETC.:BLC certification may be required based on specific role requirementsIATA Hazardous Good Shipping CertificationCITI Human Research Protection CertificationCRA and/or OCT-C CertificationCOA CertificationPHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:Ability to physically assist patients from wheelchairs into exam chairs.Ability to escort patient to other floors within the department as needed.Ability to assist the elderly and visually impaired.Requires prolonged standing, walking, some bending, stooping, and stretching.WORKING CONDITIONS:Typical clinical and administrative office settingClose contact with children, adolescents, elderly, and sensory handicapped patients, with some exposure to blood and hypodermic needles.Busy multi-specialty practice, and work environment involving several physicians.Must be able to perform all essential functions of this position with reasonable accommodation if disabledMay access PHI/HIPAA identifier as part of daily tasksAdditional InformationAll your information will be kept confidential according to EEO guidelines.AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES STATEMENT:Must be able to perform all essential functions of this position with reasonable accommodation if disabled.The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed.
